Will we ever see music released in a mixed format?
 

Track 1.) vocals
Track 2.) lead guitar
Track 3.) bass guitar
Track 4.) drums
Track 5.) backing vocals

I always thought that DVD Audio would be the stepping stone to a format where the listener could mix the music in ever which way they would chose. Maybe only one track or two tracks or a combination of tracks or the song in its completed state.

So actually ever song could be 5 songs.

When the DVD format first arrived,The Beastie Boys actually tried this on one of their dvds.

Well, Blu-ray can mix "secondary audio" with another stream, but I don't know how many can be mixed together. It might just be one stream with one more. But with enough streams, I suppose they could do any combination. Something only playable on a computer, of course, could be more complex and allow you to mix anything.

I just don't think there would be much demand for this, and some artists may not allow it. Wasn't Led Zeppelin against this for Rock Band?

The Flaming Lips put out a album called Zaireeka in 1997 that was 4 CD's, all covering the same songs. Each CD had a different element of the song, one would have guitar and background vocals, another had Drums and other noises. All 4 cd's had to be played together to hear the complete song, you could mix each song however you wanted to.

This seems like it would be a cool idea for some albums but I can't really imagine there being much demand for it.

Didn't Trent (NIN) release some unmixed multitracks for GarageBand that you could mix/play with?

I would think artist control would be the big issue since you're significantly changing the final product. And of course these days it'd be really easy to post and circulate an "altered" version.

Unquestionably, Zaireeka is the best album I've only ever listened to three times.

I know some artists have released stems of their songs/albums for this purpose. Wikipedia has an incomplete list here.

From what I remember, Jimmy wasn't against so much against the idea as he was against letting anyone other than himself handle the masters for fear of them being lost/damaged.

One of the alt-rock bands of the late 1990's did this. Barenaked Ladies, maybe?

Trent's done it a few times. I know artists have done it on single songs to get remixes, etc. done. Tricky's done it. Dogs Die in Hot Cars did their sophomore album this way.

And of course, in hip-hop, you have most songs being released in A Capellas and Instrumentals for a very, very long time. But that's also a genre where the music and the sung lyrics can be swapped easily.
