Re: What concert did you recently attend?
2018-05-18: Rock on the Range - Day 1 in Columbus, OH. Mostly standard festival fare.
A Perfect Circle sounded fine, but they might as well have just piped in the music. They played after dark very dimly lit, wearing black, with smoke on the stage. You could really only see bits from the video screen. People pay for a special VIP side stage experience here, and Maynard kicked everyone out of that for the APC set. Poor choice of a band (I think Tool will be similar tomorrow night) for this festival.

Not a music concert, but went to An Evening with Kevin Smith last night. Great funny show.

Attended Slayer's farewell tour stop here in Chicago. I did the meet & greet, was told to be there by 2pm sharp!, so I was there around 1:30pm on a 90+ degree day. They made us wait outside in the heat for some two and a half hours, and early on I think I was suffering from heat exhaustion, feeling nauseous and queasy. But I toughed it out (okay, I puked in the porta-potty and felt much better after that), and got to spend perhaps 15 seconds getting my photo with the band.
That behind me, the show was great. Took most of Testament and Behemoth's set to start feeling better, but I did enjoy all of the sets. Kind of sad that this may be the last Slayer show I see. Hopefully it's one of those false farewell tours and that they will be back in 3 or 4 years after some time off. Although I'm already thinking about possibly hitting the show in St. Louis in August.

I saw the Descendents for the first time ever on Sunday. (High School Me was THRILLED.) For a bunch of mid-50s punk rockers, they put on a great show. Surprisingly, the crowd was evenly split between middle aged farts like me and young folks, which gives me some hope for the future.

I won free tickets to see Tesla, Joan Jett and Styx at a (fairly) new amphitheater near me and I only really wanted to see Joan (and check out the new venue). Showed up while Tesla was playing, had a beer and overpriced pizza, went to seats for Joan and left after she was done.
Free tickets, free parking, expensive beer and pizza. It was worth it!

Saw Flotsam & Jetsam and Hammerfall last night in Joliet. I've been meaning to see F&J for some time, and after watching them last night, I'm bummed that I didn't catch their headlining show in Chicago some 18 months back since a 7 song set didn't do them justice. They do have a new album coming out this fall though, so I should have more chances to see them live again. After their set, I was able to ask Eric AK the obvious question whether they can get Jason Newsted to tour with them ( the 30th Anniversary release of Doomsday for the Deceiver would have been the obvious opportunity a couple years ago). He says they do meet up once in a while and discuss it, but it never gets finalized.

Depeche Mode in Boston last night.
Very enjoyable. Other than the Playing the Angel album, I'm not a big fan of their stuff after the early 90s, but they still bring it live. Both Gahan's and Gore's voices are still really strong.

Saw Chicago, REO Speedwagon and Michael Tolcher at The Forum on Friday. Very good show. Chicago played 2 sets, which surprised me. REO was awesome. Michael Tolcher wasn't too bad either.

2018-06-15: The Monkees present The Mike & Micky Show at the Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, OH. I hate the venue (the way they built it, the sun shines brightly in the artist's eyes in the evening), but it was a solid show. No "Monkeeing around" like the Peter/Micky (and Davy RIP) shows, but it was good to hear Nez singing a lot of the tunes again.

Saw U2 at Boston Garden on Friday.
I'm mostly a fan of the music of the first half of their career, but wow, they do put on an amazing live show. With that two-stage setup, bridge and giant video screen--combined with a really stripped-down, back-to-basics musical approach, it's quite a unique live experience. The highlight for me was hearing Acrobat live.

U2 in Boston on Friday. Awesome show and much better in person than the setlist would indicate. The show has a clear narrative and they use the stage to great effect I thought. Plus they sounded really good and the crowd was very good.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?
Robert Plant on Sat in Lake Tahoe. He sounded good and his band was great, seats were nice and close in the center on the floor, but his set was only 65 minutes long, plus a one-song encore. Only 5 Led Zep songs. A little disappointing considering how far I came for the show. Shortest headliner concert I've seen in a very long time. Almost took as long to get out of the parking lot after the show ended.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?
I'm up in NYC for work, was at dinner Monday night, and saw they were at MSG. Bought a ticket last minute. Think this is my 7th or 8th time seeing them, but first time in about 12 years, and I agree with all of what you said. The video/stage show was just incredible, and they are simply amazing performers. Money so well spent.

U2 last night at the Garden. First time I saw them live. It was really awesome to hear "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" live with backing vocals by Régine Chassagne (who was not there, obviously).
