Did you happen to catch the opening band? I know Moon Fever has been opening for them the last few shows except for the WV as their van broke down. I really enjoyed seeing them back in March when they opened for Adelita's Way.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Was at the Metallica shows last month, sitting there in between acts, talking to my kids. They were watching how people were acting , and asking questions about past shows. I brought up all the differences of how people act now, and stupid phones. Told them it use to be like a giant party, everyone crazy, and i miss all the tits that use to be shown. Now half the people sit there, and watch through their phones. Another thing, metal heads use to talk to everyone, (old ones still do) younger generations curl up in their seats or hug the wall.

I didn't prep for them on Spotify so I wasn't familiar at all with their music. They seemed to be having fun and sounded okay though. Not metal in any way. I didn't take any photos of them.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

One of my favorite new school thrash bands Exmortus last Thursday at Reggies in Chicago. They get labelled neo-classical also since they tend to perform at least one metal cover of a classical piece on each album.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

My last show of 2023 included a bluegrass metal band Native Howl at the Concord Music Hall in Chicago. This venue apparently has a new no digital camera policy, even the tiny Sony one that I use, but I was able to get a few okay photos with my phone.

Madonna last night at the Boston Garden. It was impressive, but I really didn't like the fact that there was no live band, all the tracks were pre-recorded. (And given that, I was surprised that it didn't really sound that great either.) I'd never seen her before, so I can scratch it off my list, but don't feel the need to do it again.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Gladys Knight and Patti Labelle this past Saturday. Glad to finally see both of these icons. Both sounded great. I liked Gladys more (maybe it helps that I knew more of her songs). Gladys got lost a few times and needed help from her background singers, but for the most part she was spot on. Especially on a simmering version of "The Way We Were". Patti can still hit those high notes, but it becomes a bit of a one-trick pony after a while, and got tiring. Still, glad to have crossed these two off my list!

That's wild that she doesn't perform to live music. I haven't ever seen a major concert tour without live music before. I wonder if the musicians had to bolt after her health scare required a rescheduling, or if this was the plan all along. Either way, glad she's well enough to perform again.

My wife won tickets to see Shania Twain a while back. At least half of the songs were performed without a band on stage. I realize she's more pop than country, but was still surprised that the band didn't play through every song.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Kicked off 2024 with a pair of smaller shows. First was Kid Congo Powers (Gun Club, Cramps, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) at Alex's Bar in Long Beach. Great show and a very cool, intimate venue. In addition to his solo material, we were treated to a couple of Cramps and Gun Club songs as well.

Then, saw John 5 (Marlilyn Manson, David Lee Roth, Rob Zombie) A total guitar-fest. I've seen him before so I know what to expect. Fantastic show from start to finish. if you're into insane guitar pyrotechnics, he doesn't disappoint.

And Best Americana Album for Weathervanes. I wanted to see King of Oklahoma win something, but that song seemed way out of place under Best Americana Performance.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

I just got back from the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise. Last year, I did 40 bands, 45 sets, and I was able to beat that by about 10 bands/sets. Could have done even better, but one set was cancelled after 30 minutes of waiting, and I overslept the last day and missed a couple morning sets.

First set that I saw on the cruise was Infected Rain from Moldova.

Lena definitely has some sharp fangs. Their new bassist is easy on the eyes too. Feel free to search her recent bikini post on her Instagram page, but here is my shot from their 70K set

It's funny since he was always out and about in public on the boat, both this year and last year when he was here with Dark Tranquillity. Everyone on the boat has pictures with him, either up on the rail at shows (like I did when he joined the rail with me for Kreator), scuba diving excursion, hanging at bars, in the elevator, in the hot tub on the pool deck). He was everywhere all at once, I left one venue and he was chatting with someone outside the entrance, and when I got to the next venue, he was outside chatting with someone else. I must have made a bathroom break, I don't remember, but yeah somehow he travelled the length of the ship while still mingling with fans.

Damn, looked her up, she's finer that Lena. I guess I had missed the announcement of her being the new bassist for Infected Rain.
