Saw Dokken and Lynch Mob this past weekend. George still has it unfortunately Don does not. It was still great to hear the classics performed by a couple of 70-year olds.

If I was on that boat, Perry and I would likely have never bumped into each other, at least not until some of the later sets. Fleshgod Apocalypse was a great surprise how good they are live, when I saw them with Hypocrisy back in 2019.

Here was my Day 1 which might contain more bands that you like. Somehow Day 2 had a disproportionate amount of death metal. During Day 1, the pool stage is under construction, so less options available. I wanted front and center for Kamelot and Kreator, so I stuck around the theater rather than checking out the other stages.

The schedule was released a couple days early, so I had some time to construct an optimal schedule. As bands were announced over the previous few months, I listened to them, and added them to a ranked list of bands performing. Once the schedule came out, I went through my list and went back and forth to maximize seeing my top 10 bands twice, my top 30 at least once, and checking out as many bands after that, so I had a plan to catch some 50 bands and 60 sets, but finished at 40 bands / 45 sets, sacrifices made by staying at stages, the meet & greets, and not staying up to the last show.

What I used to label as "new school" thrash are coming on 15 years now since their first album in 2008. Warbringer had the worst time slots on the boat (5:15am and 2:15am), I caught their 2:15am set, and they had a packed enthusiastic crowd

I went and saw Adelita's Way last night along with Otherwise, Moon Fever and Above Snakes. Really good show from start to finish. Me and my daughter also took in the pre-show Meet & Greet with Adelita's Way which was really cool.

One of the original bay area thrash bands from the 80s, Heathen at Reggies in Chicago last night. Unfortunately, original member Lee Atlus doesn't appear to be on this tour.

Dawes, 3/12, Warner Theatre. They skipped having an opener to play two full sets. It was one of the last few shows before Wylie Gelber leaves the band.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

I don't know how you guys get such great pictures! This is the best I could do from last night:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor last night, at a little outdoor stage next to a BBQ restaurant in the middle of the desert. It got a little chilly, but it was a pretty damn amazing show. Drug my partner to it, who had never even heard of post-rock before, and he enjoyed it as well.

You buy expensive front row seats or you get there really early to get a good spot in the pit.

Being close helps for sure, but much better to have a digital camera (instead of a phone) and some basic knowledge of the manual settings.

4/1 - Bruce Springsteen & The ESB - NYC

I was able to get a pit ticket right before going in. The crowd at this show was insane.

For those who have seen Madonna live recently, how is her show? Considering nosebleeds.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Did a quick weekend trip to Myrtle Beach and saw Nothing More, Crown The Empire and Thousand Below on Saturday. Great show and super crazy crowd. We even saw couple of women covering someones car in Saran wrap in both directions(front to back & over and under) while standing in line by a with an "April Fools" sign underneath the wrap. I'm a little disappointed Nothing More didn't play Turn It Up Like (Stand In The Fire), but they still put on a really good show. The crowd was really active during the Crown The Empire set.

Adding on to this question, is she still pulling a 90's-era Axl, and starting the show 3 hours late?

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Last night, the make up show for the one cancelled due to the tornado, here are a couple of my photos of the openers Brazillian death metal band Crypta performing on their first US tour. Crypta performed their set in Belvidere IL last Friday night, and it was after their set completed that the roof collapsed into the club, killing one and severely injuring dozens of others. One of my friends was probably the most severely injured (other than the man that died, obviously), but she is now able to feel/move her legs after spinal surgery and is in great spirits considering the massive trauma she went through. The guys behind me were at that show and showing their literal battle scars on their head and arms from the debris falling on them. I could tell they were still in shock a bit, perhaps PTSD, but it was great that they made it out for last night's make up date.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Hey Perry, I've wanted to ask this for a while : Can you walk me through what the difference is between those different "Metal" designations you cite (Death Metal, Power Metal, Thrash Metal), maybe with an example of a well known band in each sub-genre? It all seems very similar to my untrained ears.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

I'm still a novice at genre identification, but I can give it a shot. Heavy Metal as a category covered everything for quite some time for anything heavier than radio AOR rock bands of the 70s and 80s (e.g. Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and even Kiss, Scorpions and Def Leppard are metal vs Styx, Journey, REO Speedwagon which are just rock bands).

In the early 80s, bands started getting much faster, then the splintering began with thrash metal with bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Exodus, Testament, Anthrax, Overkill. They kept the same band structure of the heavy metal bands, less melodic vocals, just faster (thrashier). Power metal is a more logical extension of traditional heavy metal, and bands like Iron Maiden would be in that sub genre now, basically more a melodic sound and clean "power" vocals, with bands today like Dragonforce, Kamelot, and Hammerfall fitting there. Symphonic metal extends power metal further with keyboards and even more powerful operatic vocalists and would include bands like Nightwish, Epica, Delain, Within Temptation

Death metal really just amounts to the cookie monster vocals. It doesn't have to be fast like thrash, Obituary is an old school death metal band, but they have melody and "grooves" in their music. The subgenres of death metal then become needed to differentiate. Melodic death would feature more guitar solos and yeah, I guess melody to their song structures, with some of my favorite bands like Arch Enemy, In Flames, and maybe Amon Amarth. Technical death will feature guitars with extra strings and very intricate soloing and arrangements. Thrash and death probably overlap now with thrash having the longer melodic solos and more unique style vocals.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Screaming Females and Generacion Suicida

Suicida was a bit repetitive, couldn't really tell one song from the other even if I did speak Spanish. But man, their drummer is a real cutie, and keeps up with the fast tempos.

Screaming Females are amazing, even if the singer/guitarist is a bit lifeless. She actually made Spin Magazine's top guitarists of all time list, and deservedly so. Amazing that she is so deft on the instrument while still ringing out the vocals so well. But I was also reminded of comedian Mitch Hedberg in how she hid behind her hair most of the show.

Hey Perry, I was playing a Jackbox trivia game with the family tonight and got a question about "Which of the following is a sub-genre of Metal"? I got it right (Melodic Death Metal) thanks to you!
