I think I replied to this originally from my phone and missed the GD / Green Day acronym and replied with another Maneskin photo. At Lollapalooza for Green Day, I was farther back (I had my daughter with me that day, so I found a safer spot), so yeah I wasn't going to get any super close shots. Here are some more photos, the first two shots below kind of represented my view during the show and a closer zoomed in shot when he came out on the ramp a bit.

Caught Yes the other night. Not what they were 20-30 year ago but they are still a good band and perform the songs well.

Saw Joe Satriani last week. Good show as always, with a good backing band. The best part of the show was no opening act. He's following the same format Rush did in later years. One hour set, 20 minute break, then play for another hour and a half or so. Solid start to finish. Some newer material and most of his best known material, except for Big Bad Moon.

Absolutely. This is the third time I’ve seen them in the last 10 years and it amazes me how good Smith’s voice still sounds.

Always fun seeing these folks. I wish there were more bands out there like them. Just a really good time and still sounding great. I try and see them whenever they are close.

You've got a real talent for concert photography. I wish we had more overlap in our tastes, though.

I've managed to get a few semi-decent pictures this year, but that's just thanks to Google's software getting better. The few times I brought a real camera were not worth it at all (due to my poor results). If Google every makes a DSLR with their image-processing software, I'm in.

I upgraded my camera back in 2015 to the Sony RX100 m2, hoping that it would improve the quality of my photos. That didn't actually happen, but I got lucky and met someone that was into amateur concert photography and owned the RX100 m3. He took the time to show me the settings on my camera (I was using Auto), adjust the ISO (somewhere 800 to 1600 range works well in clubs), fix the shutter speed (around 200 to 300 range). There might be other settings that he showed me, but those are the ones that I use now. I recently upgraded from the m2 to the m5a, with the main improvement is the better autofocus and faster shooting speed, so I get a lot more good photos.

And you are correct that google software is great now. I crop the photo, add a little in the "pop" setting, decrease the "highlights" under the Light setting to soften the spotlighting, decrease the saturation in the Color settings to remove the hot reds or blues, then tweak the rest of the brightness and color settings by eye. Using google photos, it only takes a minute or so per photo.

I'm seeing Band Maid tonight, Slaughter to Prevail tomorrow night, and Mercyful Fate / Kreator on Thursday night. Band Maid should be fun though, Japanese female rock band where they wear maid outfits. What's not to like about that?

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Was in San Diego for mom's birthday and decided to catch a pre-Halloween concert at Humphrey's by the Bay. Had never been there but it was an 80's Spooktacular with Dramarama, Missing Persons and (former members) of Oingo Boingo. Pretty fun.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

I was going to ask in the Taylor Swift thread, but thought this thread might be better since some here are such professional concert-goers : Why do so many big US and World tours start in Phoenix/Glendale or Las Vegas? Iíve seen a bunch recently where one of those two places was the kickoff. TS is another one. Is it something about the venues or location that makes it an ideal starting point? Do they want to get really comfortable with the show before hitting LA and the East Coast? Seems like itís too common to be a coincidence.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Band-Maid last night at the House of Blues in Chicago. I went there a couple hours early for my early entry time of 5pm, and was 84th in the VIP line. Apparently they sold some 200 of these merch early entry VIPs, and the people up front showed up early this morning (or possibly last night?), so I ended 4 rows back on the right side. They apparently have a super dedicated fan base, with many people travelling to see multiple US dates, and 80% of their audience appeared to be white men between the ages of 50 and 65.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Man some of you see a lot of shows And take great pictures!
I don't have the energy to go to more than one a week, and that's if artists even come near here (they usually don't, and 3 hours is too far to go for most shows.)
Except for Sunday - my son and I went to RVA (right at 3 hours) to see GWAR, with Crobot and Nekrogoblikon.
It was his first real concert and man what a first one. (He went to see a crazy Youtube guy last year and had a great time, but that's different.) Normally he's not a metal fan but for some reason he got into their newest album (which I like much better than the previous one.)
I first saw GWAR almost exactly 30 years ago, at about his age, so it was awesome to share this experience with him. I haven't seen them since the GWARBQ memorial show.
Afterwards we went to the GWARBAR which was packed. The bouncer guy math'ed wrong and let him in (he's 20), so me accidentally sneaking him into a bar was another first.
All the acts were great.
Crobot was sort of old school heavy rock and roll.
Necrogoblikon was f'ing insane and fun. Instant pit, which he got dragged in to. Not his favorite experience but he dug it for a while.
Spoiler:

Love metal, don't like Gwar's albums, love seeing Gwar live. They always bring out fun openers, and the show speaks for itself.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Slaughter to Prevail at the Concord Music Hall in Chicago. I did the meet & greet along with some 100 others, and we got a pre-signed poster and a quick photo with the band. Ca-ching, $10,000 profit for an hours work. That must really help finance the tour (not to mention the line for merch must have been an hour long after the show). The show was pretty much sold out, so well over 1000 people there, with no opener bands. The entire floor was a moshpit, but thankfully I only got one solid kick in the head by a crowd surfer, so I survived for another day (which happens to be Mercyful Fate and Kreator tonight)

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Mercyful Fate, Kreator and Midnight last night at the Hard Rock Casino in Gary Indiana. Kreator and Mercyful Fate sounded fantastic, it was a great show. Kreator says they are setting up a headline tour for the US for next year, so I'm looking forward to that.

Pretty good, they didn't do any of their earlier songs though. Roger and Pete look old, but can still sing at least.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

I saw The Backstreet Boys a couple of weaks ago. I didn't listen to them when I was a teenager in the 90s, but a former colleague of mine always listened to them at work and I was surprised to how many songs I knew the lyrics by heart.
Now, years later he asked me and a friend of us, if we wanted to go. The show was actually pretty good and although it's still not my kind of music, I had a lot of fun. Being in a concert hall full of fanatic milfs is a weird experience, too.

During the summer I went to a small festival headlined by The Offspring and Sum 41. I bought the tickets 3 years ago, because I really wanted to see Offspring, but due to covid it was postponed twice and I always feared Offspring wouldn't be featured the next year. Finally I got to see them and it was great.

So I had my share of the 90s this year.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Was a flashback weekend for me.
Friday night was The Cult in smallish casino ballroom. Hadn't seen them in 30 years and they still sounded great.

Saturday was Janes Addiction and Smashing Pumpkins. Had seen Janes Addiction a few times over the years and they put on a good show. First time for Smashing Pumpkins and Billy started to lose voice later in the show and guess they had to cancel Portland last night. Glad I got to see them.
Cult below, Janes/Pumpkins a bit far back on the floor and only had blurry pics.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Probably my roughest death metal show so far this year, saw Lorna Shore, Aborted, Ingested, Angelmaker, and Ov Sulfur last night at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago. Big shirtless dude with a decent beard accounted for half of the roughly 100 crowd surfers that went directly over my head. Since it was a sold out show and packed, I didn't have as much room to move around and duck down, so my neck took a lot more hits than normal. The merch was incredible, it was like being in a death metal museum and you could purchase all of this great artwork for $30 a piece. I walked away with 5 shirts, but definitely could have gotten more. The crowd was probably 30% young attractive females which is much different that my usual experience with my usual thrash bands.

Re: What concert did you recently attend?

Had tickets to see Starcrawler tomorrow, just received an email the show was canceled. Nothing on the band's socials or the venue's sites. Really bummed as I have been waiting for them to come to town.
