I saw Aimee and her band in Vancouver on Tuesday. Great show!
She played both those new songs, and they were really good (especially 'Going Through the Motions').

Her and her band also played a really cool version of BTO's 'Taking Care of Business' :) She actually got her opening band, The Honeydogs, to come up and play it together.

dick_grayson 08-27-04 12:26 PM

Yeah, I saw her a month or two ago. Great live show!

Elpresidentepez 08-28-04 01:29 AM

Is "going through the motions" a cover from the Buffy musical? Cause that would be awesome!

Alvis 08-28-04 02:05 PM

What, no "Voices Carry"?

I agree, I know I'm gonna get another Pearl Jam DVD, but some groups and singers might only put one out forever or at least one for many, many years.

It would have been nice for her to have included Voices Carry ao that I could have that live in case she doesn't do this again.

She had some live tracks on the Lost In Space Reissue....I liked her cover of coldplay's the scientist

I don't think she ever does that song. Apparently she rarely breaks it out, but I've seen her a few times and it isn't part of her repertoire (though she will occasionally do other Til Tuesday songs).

And yes, Aimee's version of The Scientist (and also Steely Dan's Dirty Work) are great covers and I didn't know that it was released on the Lost in Space SE.

if you already own Lost in Space, you can buy just the second cd on itunes. Most of the B-sides are good songs

Jack Straw 08-29-04 07:51 PM

I saw Aimee just last night at the Ventura Theater. Her show was most excellent. Aimee was bragging about her new boxing physique flexing her bi-ceps for the crowd. I hung around after the show and was able to get her to sign my LIS S/E CD. She was very nice with those who waited around. Am very much looking forward to this long overdue release of this DVD/CD offering.

LiquidSky 08-30-04 07:36 AM

Cool! I will definitely purchase this. Saw her in Nashville in June....excellent show.

Jack Straw 09-03-04 10:51 PM

Is this up for pre-order yet?

Here's a link to a great streamed video of "Save Me" performance. This gives us a prelude of what to expect come November. The Aimee link is the 3rd one down in the right column. Check it out!

Just wanted to bump this thread to remind everyone that this DVD/CD set is coming out tomorrow (Tues).

Decker 11-02-04 09:47 AM

According to their site, it's only $13.99 at Best Buy. I'll be there at lunch today.

auto 11-02-04 09:56 AM

Might have to pick this up.

djbrown 11-02-04 10:51 AM

Not really familiar with her work, but her page on Launch at Yahoo indicates those that like Sheryl Crow and the Cranberries would like Mann. Any thoughts on that assertion?

Decker 11-02-04 11:25 AM

Well, I like Sheryl Crow and I love Aimee, but I'm not sure that they're that similar. Aimee is less commercial, more adult contempory and less rock-tinged. Have you seen Magnolia? All the music in that movie is her. I think she's fantastic. Take a listen to some of her stuff on her home page www.aimeemann.com

yeah, I popped over there and listened to a few tracks. message board on her website also had a thread of "what other artists do you like" and it meshed pretty well with my personal list. I'll give this a try.

Matt 11-02-04 11:59 AM

I'm a big Aimee Mann fan (have been ever since Magnolia). I like the Cranberries, but, other than a few tracks, I'm not too big a fan of Sheryl Crow.

She's not really easily definable, in my opinion--not too many other artists have her sound or her talent.

My DVD is on the way from Amazon--should get it today (if there's mail, I don't know) or tomorrow. Really looking forward to it--especially the new tracks from the new album.

djbrown 11-02-04 01:52 PM

anyone know how this is packaged? local Best Buy just had it in the CD style case, but her website indicates it's in a 2 disc Amaray.

Mine came yesterday from her distributor. It is a 2-disc amray case. I only had time to preview a couple of songs, but the video looks good and the sonics were good as well. I am very pleased.

Jason Bovberg 11-11-04 08:31 AM

Here's my DVD Talk review. As for packaging, it's a 2-disc Amray set.

actually it is available in either a 2-disc Amray or a 2 disc jewel case depending on what retailer you purchase it at and depending on how much of either/both configurations they ordered

Huh. That's interesting. I didn't talk about packaging in the review, but that's a curious release methodology.

Best Aimee Mann album for a newbie

So I really dig the Magnolia soundtrack and would like to get into some more Aimee Mann music. What album(s) do you recommend?

Coral 11-17-04 09:43 PM

I recommend Lost In Space and Bachelor #2... In my opinion her 2 best CDs.

You can listen to the whole Lost In Space CD on her site - streaming through your choice of Windows Media, Real Audio or Flash.

We had this thread a while ago, but I can't find it in a search.

My favorites are :

I'm With Stupid
Bachelor #2
Magnolia

in that order. Lost In Space is very good too, just fourth on my list. Her new Live CD +DVD is also great.

JAA 11-18-04 07:36 AM

Give this example of her earlier work a listen as well. Awesome!

Til Tuesday: Everything Is Different Now

Agree!

I love all of Aimee's solo CDs. Popcorn....you may want to pick up the live CD/DVD...that way, you get a cross section of her material.

When I drove to visit my folks last weekend, I cranked up the Aimee compilation I made. It made the drive seem much shorter just singing along with one hand on the wheel :)

Bachelor #2

Great sig LiquidSky :)

Not a bad song. I once played this about 20 times on a long trip and never got sick of it.

amiee mann, where to start?

Maybe the reason that it didn't come up in a search was that the original thread starter decided that her name was spelled "amiee".

This album came out a few years before the movie Ghost World did. When I first listened to the song Ghost World on the album, I liked it, but didn't get the point or understand the title. After watching the film and listening to the song again, it all became clear. What a cool song. It should have been used in the movie.

BTW: What was the Aimee Mann song that played in Jersey Girl when J Lo died? I didn't recognize it.

Coral 11-18-04 11:52 AM

Decker,

the song is called That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart, and AFAIK it's not included in any CD right now.

Her upcoming CD in March, The Forgotten Arm will apparently have the song.

djbrown 03-08-05 04:09 PM

New Aimee Mann released May 3. Streaming available now

Aimee Mann's latest CD, "The Forgotten Arm", is due to be released on May 3. Three songs per week streamed on her website for the month of March.

I've been watching her web site, and love the new songs. I am seeing her on Friday here in San Diego. Can't wait.
