Rolling Stone's Worst Songs of the '90s

ROLLING STONE'S WORST '90s SONG ENTRIES:

1. Aqua, "Barbie Girl"

2. Los Del Rio, "Macarena"

3. Billy Ray Cyrus, "Achy Breaky Heart"

4. Vanilla Ice, "Ice Ice Baby"

5. Chumbawamba, "Tubthumping"

6. Hanson, "MMMBop"

7. Celine Dion, "My Heart Will Go On"

8. Baha Men, "Who Let The Dogs Out?"

9. Right Said Fred, "I'm Too Sexy"

10. 4 Non Blondes, "What's Up?"

I call bullshit on a couple of these, especially What's Up.

Re: Rolling Stone's Worst Songs of the '90s

"What's Up" was fucking terrible, but I wouldn't put it in the Top 10. "MmmBop" was a catchy pop tune. Hanson caught a lot of shit but they didn't need an asston of autotune or a suite of producers and songwriters to make their music. Compare them to the little talentless fuckers of today...

This Top 10 is incomplete with Meredith Brooks's "Bitch", Marcy Playground's "Sex and Can-DAY", and Jann Arden's "Insensitive".

I was going to say just about everything off Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon.

Re: Rolling Stone's Worst Songs of the '90s

The problem is they went with a reader poll. There are much worse songs out there, but the general voting population for the poll probably consisted of a lot of people who weren't really around for the decade (or have poor memories of it) and thus, only the gimmicky songs and overplayed catchy pop tunes stick out to get their votes ... but the worst? Honestly I'd rather listen to any of those songs over some of the generic overproduced ballads that were hits in that decade, but thankfully those don't get much play anymore. Even if you hate Vanilla Ice, there's no way "Ice Ice Baby" is worse than the crap he released on his slide from popularity, like "Satisfaction" or "Ninja Rap", but again, not as many people remember those.

And I think "Mmmbop" only gets a bad rap because of the age of the band and their burst of teen girl fandom. If that song had been released by adults it probably would be looked upon more fondly.

I never understood why Hanson got so much crap. They aren't my kind of music, but they definitely weren't a bad band -- and at least they played their own instruments.

If you want bad songs, go with anything that consists of one phrase repeated ad nauseum -- Who Let the Dogs Out is a good choice, as is Firestarter by Prodigy and tons of other '90s techno.

Or how about all the Nirvana/Pearl Jam rip-offs? Silverchair and The Nixons, I'm looking at you.

Somehow, I doubt Chumbawamba is sleeping on a bed of money.

Yeah maybe Billy Ray Cyrus and Celine Dion but Aqua, Baha Men and Right Said Fred are probably all working at 7-11 or Pizza Hut.

Mmmbop bugged me a lot when I was a teenager, but I've forgiven it some with age.

But if a group of adults released that song I'd probably assume they had gone full retard.

Because pop musicians make sound investment decisions and continue to rake in money a decade and more after their only hit song. The only people on that list who are likely rich are Cyrus and Dion, and Cyrus only by dint of his daughter being fap-worthy.

The 4 Non Blondes chick is likely doing pretty well, given all the people she writes songs for now.

I saw her on a VH-1 "Where are they now?" show. She's written songs for a lot of people. Though the only name I can remember is Pink that she wrote a few songs for.

Re: Rolling Stone's Worst Songs of the '90s

I have to cop to being a 4 Non Blondes fan back in the day. There are still some songs by them that I like, though their best known song can get old quick. Here's another song that deserves to go on that list: Crash Test Dummies' "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm." That song was really annoying.

Anyone who doesn't know much about Chumbawamba should really check them out. They were an early anarcho-punk band. The band's history is actually pretty interesting, regardless of their one hit.
