It's funny how many of these tracks I actually own! I'd not really thought of Blancmange having a mid-eastern vibe but I think you're right... and this is one of my favourite tracks of theirs even though I'd not played it for years!

Not necessarily rock (although it came at the period he was arguably the most accepted by a rock audience), but "Around The World In A Day" by Prince off the album of the same name is quite Middle Eastern sounding, also the beat to "Life In Technicolor"/"Life In Technicolor II" (essentially the same song but with lyrics) by Coldplay as well.

Hardly THE original. The Kinks had the amazing "See My Friends" which predated "Norwegian Wood" by several months.

And neither were Middle Eastern-themed anyhow.
