Wilco - The Whole Love - Sep 27

I wouldn't say MMJ challenges the listener. They are OK but nothing spectacular. Wilco on the other hand, they CAN challenge the listener as evidenced by their seamless transition between genres and sounds (plus James voice is way more annoying then Jeff's). I'd give ANY MMJ jacket album up forever for any Wilco album without even blinking. To me and most people I know, they aren't even in the same league.

I have all the MMJ albums. And yes, its about where Wilco was 10 year ago. In a jam band kind of way.
The guitar work in Side With the Seeds is anything but bland.

My feelings on MMJ follow most people's feelings on Wilco in this thread, which is I really don't care for the last two albums. And after seeing both in concert I personally think Wilco is the better band live. Broemel didn't have me staring in slack-jawed amazement like Cline did.

just finished listening to this. It's too early to tell where it falls in the scheme of things, but it's infinitely better than Wilco (The Album), and maybe Sky Blue Sky as well. Has a bit of a Beatles vibe going on. The last track is a real standout.

Also, I'm glad to finally hear this thing, but did they have to do this limited-time streaming thing on college football kickoff weekend?

Missed the stream but this new tune (and video) rules.

Interesting . . . I am somewhat optimistic as Summerteeth remains my very favorite Wilco album.

Yeah, I really like this new album, not quite as good as the trifecta of BeingThere/Summerteeth/YankeeHotelFoxtrot, but better than the last few. The first song reminds me A LOT of Radiohead, in a good way. The only song I don't care for is the last song.
I'll be at the NY show this Friday!

Wow--for me, that's the highlight not only of this record but of the last two or three. I think it's one of the best things they've ever done.
That song is also two minutes longer on the vinyl. There's a bonus song on the vinyl, too.
Album is now streaming at NPR:
First Listen: Wilco, 'The Whole Love'

Jesus, it's already ten minutes too long. It may be an okay, if disposable, song if it were around 3 minutes, but as it is, it doesn't have enough to it to be much more than a repetitive bore.

I don't think this has been posted yet - for a couple dollars more, there's supposed to be a limited deluxe version of the CD (with different cover-art), that comes with a 2nd CD with bonus songs:
1. I Love My Label
2. Message From Mid‐Bar
3. Speak into the Rose
4. Black Moon

I ordered the extended CD and the vinyl.
As for comparing to older stuff, I left Being There behind a long time ago. This lineup of Wilco is the best ever. Much more open and less restricted.
