Björk's forthcoming album/multimedia project Biophilia

The Guardian reports that it'll be released both as a conventional album with music videos (including a clip directed by frequent Björk collaborator Michel Gondry), and as an "app album"-- specifically, a package of 10 apps for the iPad, bundled within one "mother" app. Each app will correspond to a different song on the album and will evolve in general makeup over time.

Sounds cool! I look forward to anything Bjork does.

After the nonsense of 'Medulla' and the mess of 'Volta' I'm not expecting much, but even those two had a few worthwhile tracks so I suppose I'll check out previews. She's lost her privilege for blind first-day buys, though.

The first single "Crystalline" is out now. Like pretty much everything she does, its a slow grower, but from everything I've read about the album, I expect to like it better than Medulla (which I respect her for doing something so out-there and challenging, but only a few songs did anything for me) and Volta (which was half-excellent, half-forgettable).

I still enjoy Volta.

Crystalline

Any more word(dvdtalk reviews) on this? I'm usually up on anything new by her but this one slipped by me for some reason.

I think this is the best thing Bjork's done since Homogenic. I bought the iPad app and wasn't terribly impressed, but the music is phenomenal all the way through.

Yeah, I just heard "Crystalline" and "Moon" a few minutes ago and was blown the fuck away. Wow...

It's even worse than I was expecting it to be, honestly.

My thoughts, as they happened, during my one and only listen:

I think it's safe to say that, unless she decides to finally give us that singles box she's never been able to quite commit to, I'm done with her. Sad.

I'm surprised and annoyed that this didn't get a 5.1 surround sound edition release.

She likes to milk it slowly. Patience.

Wow, what a shitty review. Was any of that supposed to be funny? It's clear you went in with a closed-mind and didn't really listen to the album. You heard it. But you didn't listen.

As I get older, I care less and less about what other people say/think about music - I just focus on what I like, and what I listen to.

It just takes too much energy to try and make people open their ears and listen. :(

It is what it says it is - a fan's gut reaction to the first listen of a much loved artist. Did I go in with expectations? Sure - it's nearly impossible these days not to approach an album without some sort of expectations. Were said expectations negative? Absolutely - everything I knew about the album going in set it up to be something I wasn't going to like, from the dull "Crystaline" to the ludicrous concept to a gradual disconnect from Björk and her music over the past decade. Does that make an opinion any less valid? Not as far as I see it. (That said, was it presented in the most professional of ways? Clearly not, but that wasn't really the point.)

Our opinion was asked. You, presumably, liked the album enough for repeated listens whereas I struggled to get through one.

I received the Blu-ray copy from Bjork's site. The only thing on disc is the 48 minute documentary. Nothing else. 1080p MPEG2, Dolby 2.0 audio, no subtitles.

The disc is Region B.

I tested it on Region A and C settings, and with both the disc automatically stops and won't play. It doesn't state anything about region coding on the Bjork website so don't say I didn't warn you.
