Re: XTC - Anyone into them?

Love XTC. I saw them in concert at the Cleveland Agora while they were promoting English Settlement. That was an awesome show, especially when they did "Melt the Guns." Black Sea and Mummer are my two favorite albums, in that order. I'm glad to see a few others appreciate Mummer. Favorite songs, "Generals and Majors," "Love on a Farmboy's Wages," "Making Plans for Nigel," "Snowman" and "I'm the Man Who Murdered Love."

One of my all time favorite bands. Torn between Black Sea, Skylarking and Nonesuch as my favorite albums but really, there's barely a bad disc out there.

XTC are like Elvis Costello to me. I'm aware of their entire catalogue, I know many of their songs by heart, but I'd never actually make an effort to listen to them, and actually will skip them more than choose to listen to them if they pop up somehow. It's a little weird, I suppose.

My favorite song of theirs is Travels in Nihilon if that gives you any clue as to where my tastes lie. Hardly representational of their work, I'd say.

That song simply haunts me. I can still remember the first time I heard it.

I had all their LPs back in the day. In the 90's I drifted away from the band and got back into them more recently. Their music holds up really well...I love all their stuff, even the obscure and more fan oriented stuff like Helium Kidz.

Somewhere around here I have XTC mini-comics I made when I was in high school.

The only reason I haven't gone back to re-buy their albums on CD is because I am waiting for the remasters...I wonder if they are going to come out at all?

Didn't their whole catalog through Nonsuch get remastered years ago?

Well, you can always listen to newer bands that clearly owe a debt to XTC:

Yes, but Andy's been talking about re-releasing all the albums again with bonus tracks such as outtakes and demos in book format like he did with the Dukes albums.

My understanding was the XTC albums would soon follow the Dukes releases but it seems that we've been waiting a while. Maybe the deluxe Dukes release was to make more money to do the XTC re-releases, I hope.

Wow, thanks for sharing that...I will look more into that band (I can't stand to listen to that poor quality MP3 for too long...but I do want to hear more.)

Edit: For Pete's sake! Their first CD goes for around $100.00 from amazon.com! I realize it's out of print but still...it's only from 2007! YIKES! Who says the physical format is dead? Clearly there is still a decent demand for it when they can justify asking that price for an out of print disc!

There's so many insanely overinflated OOP things on Amazon it's not even funny, it's sellers scheming to make a quick buck. Several times I've seen something OOP on there for a HUGE price then it turns out I find it for a couple dollars in a B&M store later on. Points in favor of "offline" shopping sometimes....

Huh? Just checked and "White Music" (their first release) is selling for $20 or so on amazon. I really wanted to cash in since I never really warmed up to it. Perhaps you are referring to another disc?

Transistor Blast is a great set, by the way. Always loved the Peel session of "Another Satellite" the best

He was talking about that Nines album, not XTC.

Thanks for posting that Love on a Farmboy's Wages video. I never saw it.

I looked at other websites...and they all sell it for about a hundred bucks.

Man, that's just crazy. I really hate the bitrate on amazon.com's MP3s or I would consider just buying the album digitally.

Re: XTC - Anyone into them?

Amazon bitrate is 256kbsp. That's respectable.

Thanks to the OP. I was at Amoeba recently and found "Oranges & Lemons", English Settelment", and "Nonsuch" in the bargain bins for about $2 each. Now I have some great music to keep me entertained for awhile. Loving them all so far.

How is that 8-disc Fuzzy Warbles box?

I've downloaded them before and that's what they say the bit rate is but the audio sounded tinny. When I checked the audio quality on it it wasn't up to par with other high quality MP3s I made myself. Now I don't know if I just got burned by a few bad MP3s early on in their days of selling MP3s, but when I posted my review of the poor quality of the file they took my review down, and I tried a few times to post the review and they kept on taking it down.

So I really don't trust it when it says that anymore.

I've been listening to this and it's actually quite amazing sounding. Partridge's demos sound as good as most people's fully produced records. I have a large collection of Pete Townshend's Scoop demos and it actually exceeds that in the number of unreleased great songs and certainly quality.

Re: XTC - Anyone into them?

MAJOR(s and Generals) fan of xtc. I believe I've purchased their entire catalog at least three times. I have numerous 7 and 12 inch vinyls, a buttload of cd singles, bootleg videos and the original Jules Verne's Sketchbook cassette. Yes, I WAS a fan club member. I have all of the Japanese remasters, so I will have to consider any new remasters carefully. Nah- I'll probably just buy them all outright. I also have the Star Park (early xtc, circa '72) cd and the Waspstrumental box set autographed by Andy and Colin. Yeah, I likes me some xtc...

I bought a bunch of the Japanese reissues about 10 years ago when they were first released; used to be pretty easy to find at any decent record store and all the Border's stores around here used to have a ton of them. They usually sold for about $17-$18. They sound really, really good.

One of my favorite bands that I hardly listen to, I wish they would reissue everything in a huge boxset.
