Pearl Jam: Vs/Vitalogy 20th Anniversary Box Set 3/29/11

Looks as though Pearl Jam is continuing with the super deluxe treatments of their albums!!

http://pearljam.com/news/vs-and-vita...rsary-editions

Can't wait to get my hands on this the Ten box is one of the coolest things I own. The albums will also be available individually on vinyl on April 12th for those not wanting the entire box.

Re: Pearl Jam: Vs/Vitalogy 20th Anniversary Box Set 3/29/11

The Deluxe Edition shows as a 3-disc set on pearljam.com

That means that the Boston concert they are including as a bonus is only a 1-discer, not the complete show, and that is really lame.

Hopefully that is just a mistake and the entire show is included.

Nope, it is not, the 4/12/94 show is only on one CD....I guess there may be more of the show on the double vinyl version included in the super deluxe box set, but I seriously doubt it....I am not surprised by this at all though, as they did not release the full "Drop In The Park" 9/20/92 show on the Ten box set either....

For further proof, IF you pre-order the super deluxe box set right now at their site, it states: "Pre-order now and receive 6 digital live tracks from the Orpheum show that are not on the CD or the LP!"

Anyway, my thoughts on the re-release: I'll still be buying the super deluxe box (to sit beside my Ten box set), but I am disappointed with it...

Last time, we got a reproduction of the Momma-son demo cassette (so awesome to FINALLY have this in excellent quality), a DVD of the Unplugged show (although edited and incomplete), and multiple unheard (even on bootlegs) bonus tracks....

This time, only three bonus tracks per disc? And of those, the alternate take of Corduroy has been available on boots forever, and Crazy Mary is just a re-purposing....if they were just going to take a previously released b-side from the era (like Crazy Mary), then where is the acoustic version of Elderly Woman, or the b-side version of Alone? Why not put Angel on there, since it was left off of Lost Dogs? What about Out Of My Mind for Vitalogy? It is not like there won't be space left on the discs...
And the cassette is just some of the performances from the Self Pollution '95 broadcast? Meh, whatever....

Re: Pearl Jam: Vs/Vitalogy 20th Anniversary Box Set 3/29/11

From The Second Disc, regarding the length of the concert:

Are Two Discs Better Than One for Pearl Jam Live Show?

The reissue conundrum of the week was figuring out how many discs of bonus material were going to figure into Pearl Jam’s upcoming reissues of Vs. and Vitalogy. The deluxe edition combines both albums with a much-requested live set at Boston’s Orpheum Theater in 1994; that set is also featured on CD and vinyl in the inevitable super-deluxe box.

But the deluxe edition listed three CDs worth of additional material, while the super-deluxe box listed four. And the deluxe CD, when pre-ordered on the band’s official Web site, promises a further six digital bonus tracks from the live show. What’s going on here? We inquired with Legacy Recordings and got this response:

"Three discs is correct. Initially it was thought that the Orpheum concert would be on two discs, but it ended up fitting on one."

So it looks like every version will have three compact discs. It remains to be see if the concert will be cut down, and by how much; Pearl Jam’s emphasis on preservation will certainly make or break fans’ expectations, as the full set list is preserved on their official Web site. Hopefully those bonus tracks will feature elsewhere than just pre-orders for the deluxe set – particularly for the sake of anyone who’s going to buy the box.

A quote from a member of the most Pearl-Jammiest place I hang out at:

Maybe it's appropriate that there's a picture of a sheep on the front of this.

I'll probably get it in one form or another. Baaa-aa.
thanks for that, Craig!

2 of my favorite albums, but not including the whole show, is pretty wack.

Underwhelming considering the treatment Ten got... I'll still get em of course, but maybe just the individual releases. Picked up the Live on Ten Legs, it's pretty good... there's so much live PJ out there though that it doesn't really stand out or anything.

The extended read between the lines version of that quote should say "We thought it would be on two dics (which it would be if we released the whole thing), but it ended up fitting on one after we edited it down, threw out the three cover songs, and then decided which six tracks would not be on it and only available as a pre-order download bonus"....

No, it doesn't remain to be seen, it is DEFINITELY being cut down, I have had the bootleg of this show for more than 15 years, and it runs over two hours total.....besides, I can easily bet right now exactly which ones will be completely missing from both the dics and the d/l....

Here is the full setlist:
set: Oceans, Even Flow, Sonic Reducer, State of Love and Trust, Hard to Imagine, Immortality/(Hey Hey, My My), Go, Animal, Glorified G, Daughter/(Suck You Dry), Alone, Not for You, Better Man, Rats, Blood
enc: Release, Tremor Christ, Once, Fuckin’ Up, Dirty Frank, Yellow Ledbetter, instrumental jam, Rearviewmirror, Elderly Woman, I’ve Got a Feeling/jam

Say goodbye to the three cover songs, as both covers from the 9/20/92 show were missing from the TEN box set release...

Does anyone know if this box set is going to be available at retail (like Best Buy) like the Ten one was? I can't find any info on it.

As much as I want the super deluxe set, I'm also expecting it to show up in retail outlets for a cheaper price. I can't justify spending $150 on that.

Yeah, the deluxe would be nice - but I think after spending $50 on the Radiohead set recently I'm destined to only be able to justify the vinyl editions of these. Oh well.

Anybody pick this up yet? I saw the 3-disc set at BB yesterday, but had to pass for now. Just too many other things to pick up.

Same here. I really want it, but since these are just re-issues I have to go with a handful of other things I'm wanting.

It would have been money easily spent if they did a Rock Band bonus with this set.

Was initially going to pass on this, but the packaging really sold me... nice hefty feel to it. Went ahead and ordered off Amz. Yeah, expensive week for music/movies, but might as well get them while they're on sale.

Re: Pearl Jam: Vs/Vitalogy 20th Anniversary Box Set 3/29/11

The 1994 concert is really good. I think because Eddie Vedder actually sounded really good back then.

It blows away how his voice comes off on all of those cd concerts they released later on.

The bonus songs are good. I like hearing alternate versions of some of my favorite songs off of Vitalogy, but it's too bad PJ apparently ran out of unreleased songs on Lost Dogs.

I haven't picked this up yet but I will order it shortly - reason being, in Canada, in stores, this thing is $54.99. I can get it on Amazon.COM for $30 less. Ridiculous.

Re: Pearl Jam: Vs/Vitalogy 20th Anniversary Box Set 3/29/11

Got the Deluxe 3 Disc set from Amazon. The packaging is pretty nice. The live CD is great except for "Sonic Reducer". Eddie lets the lead singer from Mudhoney sing with him and it completely ruins the song for me. I have an old bootleg with SR...and I was hoping this would be an improved version.

I haven't done a side by side listen with the originals to see if there are any subtle differences with the new remastered versions (the Remastered version of Ten sounded a lot different to me). I know that "Elderly Woman..." sounds identical to the original disc to my ears. I feel like "Go" sounds a bit clearer...but that's about it so far.

My original vs. disc is so scratched up (bought it the day it came out) that "Leash" and "Immortality" won't even play anymore...so I needed a new one anyway.

I forgot how much I love both of these albums. If you like Pearl Jam, this set is easily worth $25 in my opinion..and I'm not even close to the fan I once was.

Re: Pearl Jam: Vs/Vitalogy 20th Anniversary Box Set 3/29/11

Protip: When trying to avoid a Pearl Jam release, don't listen to Pearl Jam Radio all week.

I caved and picked it up at BB earlier. I took in a few old laptops to recycle and they charge you $10 a pop and give it back to you in gift cards, so... the packaging is pretty nice. I listened to half of vs. on the way home and it sounded great. Not sure if it sounds better than the original though.
