The White Stripes have officially broken up / are defunct [merged]
The White Stripes have officially broken up. According to an announcement on their website, "The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way."
The statement also mentions that Jack White's Third Man Records label will continue to release unheard studio and live recordings from the band through their Vault subscription club.

Sucks but it's been so long since they've done anything that it's hardly a surprise.

Guess it's not a huge shocker, but I'm still bummed -- it's been several years since their last proper album. I like White's other projects ok but I've never quite loved them like I do most of the White Stripes stuff, something primal and garage-rock about it all. I never even minded Meg's low-fi drumming.

NEW YORK (AP) — The White Stripes are done.
The groundbreaking rock duo announced Wednesday they are splitting up and "will make no further new recordings or perform live."
Jack White and Meg White say there are a "myriad of reasons" for the breakup, but the main reason is to "preserve what is beautiful and special about the band."
The last recording by the White Stripes was the live album "Under the Great White Northern Lights," released last year.
Over the years, Jack White has focused attention on other projects, including the bands the Dead Weather and the Raconteurs, as well as his Nashville, Tenn.-based Third Man Records.

They had a good run. Best to see them end it on those terms.

It sucks but in a way I can agree that it was somewhat expected. They haven't really done anything in a few years and it seems like Jack has been spending more time working with The Raconteurs/The Dead Weather and his record label. I'll miss the band though I really like all of their albums except for Get Behind Me Satan which I feel is just okay.

Statement says: "The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now"
When do I start getting my residuals?

Not a big surprise...there really is no place to go for their style...Jack has done pretty much everything he could for the type of band they are and music they play.
"The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue"
PLEASE....how corny, Meg just followed Jack's lead - I don't mean to sound negative but that's exactly how it was and I'm sure I'm not filling anyone in on this either.

Anyone who didn't see this after the Under Great White Northern Lights set and documentary wasn't paying attention close enough. It was obviously a farewell to the fans.

Sadness.
I love The White Stripes and can't wait for the eventual reunion tour. Now JAck needs to get back in the studio with The Raconteurs.

Bummer. Love the band -- far more than any of Jack's other side projects.

I guess i'm not shocked but i am sad there won't be another WS album. I will continue to enjoy the six they did release though.

This does indeed suck. But with the litany of other projects Jack White is involved in, I am not too concerned (since they are also awesome). Hopefully he can crank out another Raconteurs and Dead Weather record now.
I would also love to see other Loretta Lynn collaboration, Van Lear Rose was her best in decades and the record was simply incredible.

This sucks.
None of Jack White's other bands/side projects ever came close to the greatness of the White Stripes.

eh, doesn't bother me too much. I appreciated the genius of the White Stripes simplicity but I enjoy the Dead Weather much more.

There are a many of other musicians/groups worth hearing.
