Re: Van Halen New Album

All this talk about Diver Down and Fair Warning...why no love for Women and Children First? This is another favorite album of mine from the Dave era, and I always take it to listen to, along with DD and FW, whenever I need my VH fix. After the release of their first two albums, I think this is the one that finally showed them as the loosened-up, hard-rockin' party band that they came to be known for. Great songs, and generally a lot of fun. How many hard rock bands from the time had the nuts to throw something like the simple and playful acoustic number "Could This Be Magic" into a collection of songs that can be best described as "bombastic"?

I've always liked the story about how Eddie wanted to use keyboards all the way back to the early days, but Dave wouldn't have anything to do with it, so by the time WaCF came around, Eddie pumped a Wurlitzer electric piano through a Marshall amp and made it sound like a guitar, and "And the Cradle Will Rock" was born.

And who can forget this bit of movie magic?

Ashamed to admit that I still feel compelled to crank up "Panama" every time it comes on the car radio.

And sing madly at the top of my lungs during the chorus.

One of all-time best riffs.

I still don't understand the Kool And The Gang connection. It's just plain strange.

There's another one previewed on their FB page, "Stay Frosty". Not very good.

Both sound better than Tattoo...Blood and Fire is actually pretty decent.

(I've only listened to them both once so far, so this is subject to change)

My guess is it was Dave's ideas. He's a fan of hokey party music. Remember he turned a 50 year old song made famous by Louis Armstrong into a pop hit in the 80s. What's more of a hokey party song than Celebration and Get Down on it?

It's an odd pairing, but I bet Kool & the Gang put on a better show than some lame current-day hard rock band. FYI, they were a legit funk bank ('Jungle Boogie', 'Hollywood Swinging') before morphing into a lame pop band in the '80s.

p.s. Dave covered a Louis Prima hit.

Dave covered the medley that Louis Prima made famous, this is true, but Louis Armstrong did record "Just a Gigolo", so it's not a total faux pas.

Re: Van Halen New Album

Ok I love Van Halen but the new songs almost sound like more of an homage to 80s rock or something. I like it for sounding like that but I don't think this is an album I'd listen to more than once if I bought it.

I think that's the general idea they're going for. If you're trying to appeal to fans of your band in your heyday, then one of your options would be to make an album that sounded like that time period. I think they are purposely trying to sound like the Van Halen of old - circa the David Lee Roth years - because a) they're trying to remind people of that time period, and/or b) that's what they think people want from them. When you haven't released a record proper in 14 years, or a full length with your original singer in 28, you mostly have to count on nostalgia. The only problem with that is it works against you as much as help's you.

Click on the rows of album cover links near the middle of the page. There are previews of the following songs:

Blood and Fire
China Town
You Really Got Me (2012 acoustic version)

Agreed. I'm actually looking forward to seeing them. Van Halen are a fun band and so are Kool and the gang. I appreciate some variety.

Tattoo turned up on the most recent episode of CSI. You can guess the setting without tuning in...

And also I suspect most of the songs on this album are outtakes and not quite finished songs from that era in the first place.

Preview clips of all the songs:

Tattoo is the weakest on the bunch. I'm pretty damn excited after hearing all of these.

Damn, you got that right! This should help restore faith to those not happy with Tattoo.

I heard the 90 second preview of China Town and it was much better than Tattoo.

"Stay Frosty" is like a part 2 of "Ice Cream Man", I'm liking it.

Re: Van Halen New Album

It's been confirmed most/all the songs were from their early days. Eddie went through a bunch of demos and picked out bits and parts that they thought would make decent songs and used those for the basis of the record.
