Well I can give you a couple examples from Agalloch that might explain it.
This one is more folky then blackmetally

And this one is more blackmetally than folky

I don't see it mentioned so I will throw in Velvet Cacoon. Good luck trying to find some of their stuff. But if you can, you might dig it.

Also, this applies to some of their work, the band Boris has done work with Sunn O))) and has some their own ambient stuff out with Merzbow (which I like). Just keep in mind Boris is a Japanese band.

Re: Ambient/folk black metal suggestions?

Just discovered another group that would fit this criteria, though they're a little more folk than black metal. Ok, maybe a lot... but fans of Agalloch should enjoy.

There's this band called Angelic Process which is kinda drone/ambient/shoegaze metal. I really like it. I don't know of really any other bands that have this sound. I would imagine it's an acquired taste but damn it's great to listen to.

Yeah, they've been around for a while and are pretty good. I'd put them in the same post/noise rock category as stuff like Om or Boris, though. Maybe slightly more metal like Isis and Pelican.

Found a couple more that fit the bill:

Gallowbraid (if you love Agalloch, you'll love these guys. They sound identical.)
