Jay Farrar & Benjamin Gibbard's One Fast Move Or I'm Gone: Music From Kerouac's Big Sur should have been nominated for something.

^Actually Britney can sing, but it seems we rarely see it. She sang live on SNL, but anytime she's doing an MTV award dance production number, bloated or not bloated those tend to be lip-synced.

After scouring lots of news stories, I found this blurb about Drake's eligibility:

Drake scored two Grammy nominations last year, prior to the release of his platinum-selling debut, "Thank Me Later" (which earned a nomination for best rap album on Wednesday).

But the 24-year-old was still eligible for best new artist thanks to a change in requirements that allowed previous nominees to be nominated for the award as long as they didn't win.
That's a phenomenally stupid rule change, but at least it explains why it could happen.

So someone could win best new artist 20 years after their first release, as long as they didn't win in the category prior to that point?

True. I was thinking of her too. Her voice is barely passable. What you hear on her albums is really the work of producers and studio magic.

Eminem has a new album out? Thanks for not telling me.

(Note: The above is NOT sarcasm. I want to honestly and sincerely thank everyone I know either in real life or online for keeping wonderfully unaware of this "musical" release. In this case, ignorance was bliss, and I'm just sorry it had to end because of the damn grammy nominations.)

It's not like they haven't acknowledged that. In 1999, the year she broke out huge, she lost the Best New Artist award to fellow Mickey Mouse Club member Christina
Agulera even though Christina only had one single to her credit at the time.
Brit's only win was in the dance category, which is all about production and mixing, not vocals

PJ Harvey has never been nominated for Album of the Year.

Does this mean we are going to be honored with another chance to here Katy Perry singing live? :yack:

I'll give her props for not lip-synching I guess...

Yes and at least, Ke$ha wasn't nominated for anything (that I'm aware of).

In 2001 Shelby Lynne won best new artist. Her first album was released in 1989.
The album that she won for, I am Shelby Lynne, was her sixth.

Canada representing with Arcade Fire, Justin Beiber, Neil Young, Micheal Buble and Drake. Drake's the odd man out never being on SNL - but he could host as he's acted (Degrassi says Hi). Don't care for any of their music anyways.

This is the first I've heard of the nominations - I'm obviously out of touch as well.

Yes, I mentioned above that I had remembered that incorrectly. I probably got confused because Stories From The City/Stories From The Sea won the Mercury award that year.

In the rock category, the Grammy seem to be elitist snobs, I don't think have heard any of that music on the radio.

Yeah because we all know radio is the place to look for the best new rock music in 2010

I never usually pay attention to the Grammys or take much stock in who wins or is nominated but I am majorly rooting for Esperanza Spalding.

Even if someone with quite a few albums already isn't really a "new artist" getting nominated and pulling off some kind of upset would be deserved exposure for a great artist.

Here's the track listing for the Grammy Nominee CD which will be released on Tuesday. $6.99 at Amazon, Best Buy, and I assume others.

1. Forget You - Cee Lo Green
2. Nothin' On You (Radio Edit) - B.o.B Feat. Bruno Mars
3. California Gurls - Katy Perry Feat. Snoop Dogg
4. Telephone - Lady Gaga feat. Beyoncé
5. Love The Way You Lie Eminem Feat. - Rihanna
6. Need You Now - Antebellum, Lady
7. Ready To Start - Arcade Fire
8. Whataya Want From Me - Adam Lambert
9. Half Of My Heart (Pop Mix) - John Mayer
10. Haven't Met You Yet (Album Version) - Michael Bublé
11. Just The Way You Are - Bruno Mars
12. This Is It (Orchestra Single Version) Michael Jackson
13. Beg Steal Or Borrow - Ray LaMontagne And The Pariah Dogs
14. The House That Built Me - Miranda Lambert
15. Babyfather (Radio Edit) - Sade
16. The Only Exception - Paramore
17. Hey, Soul Sister (iTunes Session) - Train
18. Misery - Maroon 5
19. Don't Stop Believin' (Regionals Version) - Glee Cast

I usually buy them or get them from the library as well as the "Now That's What I Call Music" series. Great cross-sections of current music.

Sounds like the exact reason I would never buy it.

I won't speak for "NOW" because I think they're crap, but the Grammy compilations are pretty cool. Have introduced me to several acts I hadn't heard of before and are fun to listen to a few years down the road as music you never hear or listen to any more. It's a shame that they didn't include the Best New Artist nominees this year (I think they always have in the past), as that's always an interesting listen. They did a better job than usual of representing the other big nominees, with all the Best Album and Best Song and all the Best Record Nominees except "Empire State of Mind" appearing. Nice to get versions of "Love the Way You Lie" and "Fuck You" that I can actually listen to with kids in my car!

I ordered it from Amazon. Good deal, made better because they sent a $1 MP3 credit after I ordered.

BTW : Who knew that Sade was a duo or group? For 25 years, I've always thought she was a female vocalist!

Good question. The single might be a remix version, which would be eligible by the rules in this category.

The album falls into the eligibility period since it was released 9/29/09 (per La Roux's own website discography), and due to a fluke in scheduling the awards, this year's eligibility period is 13 months long : September 1, 2009 to September 30, 2010.
