I know mainstream music is awful but Frightened Rabb. . . . I mean Mumford & Sons for best new artist? Yikes!

Wonderful noises I've been enjoying all day long . . .

They're obviously influenced by a lot of other acts out there, but Sigh No More is a great album and I'd rather have them win than Bieber or Drake. Still, I hope Florence + The Machine wins over Mumford & Sons. I don't know anything about Esperanza Spalding, but after a quick search it seems like she's been around for a while.

I'll have to check out Frightened Rabbit though. Thanks for the recommendation!

There is a world of difference between "influenced" and flat-out mimicking other acts. I don't know who Bieber and Drake are but I don't follow the bands nominated for Grammys. I know who Mumford & Sons are and just found it amusing that they were up for some kind of award.

I don't like either band, but at least Rabbit came first and are somewhat more original and appealing in comparison to Mumford. I would certainly say if you like Mumford you should definitely like Rabbit.

"Bye Bye Bye" (the first song on Parc Avenue from Plants and Animals) is one of my favorite opening tracks in recent memory. The Neon Trees album is middling, but at least it only cost me a buck thanks to the Amazon MP3 credit.

Re: What are you listening to? [December 2010]

This week it's the following:

Grinderman "Grinderman 2": saw them at the Music Box on Tuesday and they were intense. Nick Cave is a total badass.

Killing Joke "Absolute Dissent"

Smashing Pumpkins "Machina: The Machines of God"

Joe Satriani "Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards"

Paul Gilbert "Fuzz Universe"

Not being able to pick a song out of a line-up is one thing but I find it hard to believe you've never heard of Justin Bieber.

And generally your taste in music is pretty good so I understand you not listening to him-as any rational adult with taste wouldn't listen to him-but being so lucky as not to have heard of him is probably a rare thing these days.

I drove to Memphis to see them a few weeks ago and they were fucking amazing. That was one of the best concerts I have ever seen and will ever see.

I didn't know it was "Justin Bieber" by the post, I thought it was the name of a band, yes, I am aware of him. The post was about Grammy nominations for new bands and I thought Bieber and Drake were the names of bands since the poster mentioned them. I am aware that there is a Justin Bieber & that he is a kid who sings, but outside of that I could not name a song or tell you what he looks like.

I don't know about my taste being good (it certainly isn't popular here), but I appreciate it anyway.

I knew you had at least heard of him as he is inescapable these days.

As for your taste, I look forward to these threads and seek out your posts specifically to check out the stuff that you're listening to at the time. I quite enjoyed the Young EP by Summer Camp that I discovered through one of your posts. Thanks for that by the way.

Re: What are you listening to? [December 2010]

Got this one some months ago, but didn't really give it much of a chance then. Through boredom, decided to give it another spin, and I'm really liking it now, though.

Also...

how is the Groove Armada 'Black Light' album? I've read that 'White Light' is the better of the two 2010 releases.

Re: What are you listening to? [December 2010]

Since posting that I have listened to White Light and it is definitely the better of the two. Black Light is pretty good as well, but the "live" remixes on White Light are top notch and sound more like the Groove Armada type sound that you're used to hearing.

I haven't heard the EP but I listened to a track from the full length that Pitchfork has streaming and I really dug it. It caught my eye because the cover-art for the album was so awesome.

It might not be exactly your thing but if you haven't already you should check out the album Sports by Weekend which was released a month or so ago. They're kind of a post punk/no wave band with some shoegaze elements. They're definitely for people who like Joy Division, early Cure, The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine.
