Re: THROWDOWN: Jenny Lewis VS. Grace Potter

In all fairness, it's difficult to compare artists for their art, so, I might just be putting Jenny and Grace up for judgment on their sex appeal alone (IMO they're tied on that aspect), but I think they are both very exciting performers having seen both of them live now. Grace is much more of a rock/soul/R&B singer, whereas Jenny's approach (at least in her singing style) is definitely less charged, but uses her voice in a way that isn't so flat.
Musically Grace Potter sounds like a revisit of Janis Joplin and other music of that era--Jenny Lewis's music leans toward alt-country or alt-folk.
I've known about JL much longer and I'm more biased for her, but GP has just as much promise.

Grace Potter has a great band, they can jam and she's really hot.
Jenny Lewis has been in my head since I was 6, I prefer her lyrics and vocals.

Jenny wins by a hair.

Blake Sennett is much more innovative guitar player than anyone in the Nocturnals who never stray from the basic blues-riffs, they can jam but they never leave the blues scale.

And Jenny is way hotter, a much better song writer, and a far better vocal range that she doesn't show off enough.

Not even a contest for me.

Yes the Nocturnals basically stay within the blues confines with their jams but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I think Grace Potter is a better musician and has amazing legs.

With all of that said, these lyrics (provided by The Boss) were going through my head when I voted.

Well, brunettes are fine, man
Blondes are fun
But, when it comes to getting the dirty job done,
I'll take a red-headed woman, a red-headed woman.
It takes a red-headed woman to get a dirty job done.

Well, listen up, stud,
Your life's been wasted
'til you've got' down on your knees and tasted
A red-headed woman, a red-headed woman.
It takes a red-headed woman to get a dirty job done.

Tight skirt, strawberry hair
Tell me what you've got, baby, waiting under there.
Big green eyes that look like, son,
They can see every cheap thing that you ever done.

Well, I don't know how many girls you dated, man
You ain't lived 'til you've had your tires rotated
By a red-headed woman, a red-headed woman.
It takes a red-headed woman to get a dirty job done.

^Yes, your transcript of Springsteen's explicit ode to his wife is kind of confusing. I thought you said you liked GP over JL.

I voted for Jenny Lewis and expressed that in my original post. The Bruce lyrics run through my head every time I think of JL, i've got a thing for spice.

Re: THROWDOWN: Jenny Lewis VS. Grace Potter

^Ah, got it, I didn't see that was you. Grace probably is, in some ways, a better singer--I don't think I've heard Jenny Lewis get to the heights and volume Grace Potter does (Except the falsetto on 'Godspeed', but I'm not sure that's the same thing). But regardless of the type of soul Grace Potter embodies, Jenny Lewis offers her own version of whatever that is in a presentation that seems to defy genre (She goes from bluesy-rock to folk to country to early 70's style string-drenched soul--'Trying My Best To Love You')
BTW, musicianship wise, they both play guitar, keyboards and light drums. Jenny also plays bass.
But ITA, GP does have killer legs. ;)

And she got the medicine that everybody wants! Actually, they both have it.

I'd listen to Jenny Lewis doing anything. Except that last Rilo Kiley album. blech.

Jenny Lewis.

Plus she was in The Wizard.

I really like Rilo Kiley and all her various solo stuff- so I voted for Jenny Lewis.

But I've enjoyed Grace Potter too. I got Nothing But the Water in 2006 with its bonus CD and a number of its tracks really blew me away. I've got both CDs released since then and like them too. Trouble is, while I enjoy her music while I'm listening to it, it's forgettable as soon as it's over.

I like Jenny Lewis' voice much more than the music that she writes.
