Re: Weezer offered $10M to break up

James Burns so wants to see the permanent end of Weezer that he is willing to put $10 million (mostly other people’s, in $12 increments) on it.

The Seattle resident has mounted a pledge on DIY fundraising website thepoint.com, calling for the end of the band who, he tells local weekly The Stranger,”are everywhere 15 years after they’ve been musically relevant, whether you try to avoid them or not.”

“If I’m going to be really real,” he continues, “this is a roundabout effort to figure out why the media is still interested in this band despite them not releasing a decent album in over a decade (or I would say, ever.) … Even my girlfriend, the world’s biggest Weezer apologist, concedes that they should have packed it in after side one of The Green Album.“

One Pitchfork re-post later, and Burns actually garnered a response from the band—drummer Patrick Wilson posted on his Twitter, “if they can make it 20, we’ll do the “deluxe breakup”!”

Burns has promised that if he fails to reach the full $10 million goal, he will refund all contributions, minus thepoint.com’s 5% fee; as of this post, he had reached 1%, raising approximately $194.

Click after the jump to read Burns’ full mission statement.

I have never been a fan of this band. I think that they are pretty much horrible, and always have been. Even in the early 90’s.

But this isn’t about me. This is about the Weezer fans. They are our brothers and sisters, our friends, our lovers.

Every year, Rivers Cuomo swears that he’s changed, and that their new album is the best thing that he’s done since “Pinkerton,” and what happens? Another pile of crap like “Beverly Hills” or “I’m Your Daddy.”

This is an abusive relationship, and it needs to stop now.

I am tired of my friends being disappointed year after year.I am tired of endless whimsical cutesy album covers and music videos.

I’m sick of hearing about whatever this terrible (and yes, even if you like the early stuff, you should be able to admit that they are wretched now) excuse for a band is up to these days.

If all 852,000 of you (really?) who bought “Pinkerton” pitch in $12, we will meet our goal.

I beg you, Weezer. Take our money and disappear.

Re: Weezer offered $10M to break up

Maybe Mr. Burns could just tell his friends to stop buying the albums.

At least make it Nickelback if you're going to try to get a band to split up.

*sigh*

1% of $10,000,000 is not "approximately" $194. It's $100,000. Fucking reporters can't even do math anymore?

English majors probably didn't take many math classes. Figuring 1% of 10M is hard for them. Be nice.

Re: Weezer offered $10M to break up

The title of this thread should be changed to "random guy with less than $200 likes the idea of giving Weezer $10 million to break up".

I can't really fault the media for picking up on this story considering the fact that an actual Weezer member responded to the "offer" but other than that it's pretty un-newsworthy.

Needless to say, he'll have a hard time coming up with an amount of money that would compete with the money they got from the people who recently purchased "Hurley", you know, the ones who bought enough copies to give it a top-10 debut?

Add me to the list of people who are befuddled that this is "news". This guy's efforts are one step above an internet petition.

Re: Weezer offered $10M to break up

I would say that a lot of "musicians" and "artists" should disappear but if they want to make music that I don't like then I will just avoid it. This guy sounds like an attention whore.

What? Next you'll be saying the same thing about the guy posting YouTube videos of himself not using the Internet.

While I do fancy the idea of Weezer just going away at this point, this is dumb.

While I agree Nickelback should be disbanded, we should not be paying for it. It should be by government decree or under threat of death.

Seriously, when your shuffling the 'Most Wanted' playing cards. Nickelback would be the Ace of Spades (if your not including Country singers).

Weezer would be like the 4 of Diamonds.

They certainly suck these days but greater evils exist.

Don't forget Fred Durst is still alive too.

Re: Weezer offered $10M to break up

I laughed when one guy posted this on his little blog/thread:

"People actually say "lulz"?"

Maybe someone needs to collect 10 dollars and make this guy go away. Talk about wasting your personal time on nothing.

I would guess this whole thing let's Weezer know that they're still somewhat relevant, because you know that no one is offering a band like Silverchair any money to disband.

Is this guy friends with the founders of thepoint.com or something? They're the only ones who stand to benefit from this lame attention-grab.

Bah - this is just his attempt to get $500,000 free. He should have picked Lady Gaga or someone more polarizing.

He should have just facebooked it, isn't that what everyone else is doing these days?

A few options on the latter comes to mind:
-Death by stoning
-Tied to the queen of hearts, banished and shunned for life
-Probably power up the next Metallica or Ozzy concert with their electric chairs, that'd be a show.
-Same as last option but Ozzy bites each band member's head off

Now the government decree, get the Governator on their asses.

For the record, it isn't Buttmunker!

And (for the record), not ALL Weezer is bad. Raditude came out in 2009, only a year ago, and there are at least six tunes that are pretty decent.

I haven't gotten into anything from Hurley yet, and even if I never do, I'm confident that Rivers Cuomo will come up with at least ONE song in his next effort that I'll like.

***
So what if Weezer disbands? It's just a name. It won't stop Rivers Cuomo from either becoming a permanent solo artist, or forming a new band name with the same members. I doubt that guy has enough sense to put something in fine print at the bottom about "stipulations."
