Black Country Communion - Supergroup?

Their album came out last month, and it's really quite good. Some people have called them a supergroup, but producer Kevin Shirley (who helped put the band together) doesn't feel that the term applies to this band.

Who's in the band? Former Deep Purple/Trapeze bass player/singer Glenn Hughes, new blues/rock guitar legend Joe Bonamassa, Jason Bonham on drums, and Dream Theater keyboard player Derek Sherinian.

They sound really good - they've got great chemistry. I hope this isn't a one-off album as I'd like to hear a couple more from them.

Now this is a band that sounds like a Classic Rock band. This could easily have been done in 1976. Some of it sounds a lot like it was from 1974 (actually, the title track to Trapeze's Medusa is brought back to life here).

If you like 70's hard edged Rock with a slightly bluesy feel, then this one is for you.

Jeez...

And, on an interesting side note - Glenn Hughes was Ronnie James Dio's favorite singer and the two became friends decades ago.

Re: Black Country Communion - Supergroup?

Having seen all the members in their other bands before, this is certainly something worth checking out for me.

I saw Bonamassa when he was a nobody opening for Peter Frampton in Morristown about 5 years back. That cat is incredible. Although he hasn't reached legendary status yet, to say he is anything but amazing is an insult.

Thanks for the heads up on this one.

Re: Black Country Communion - Supergroup?

Just got this over the weekend and I'm really enjoying it. Definitely in the 70's rock vein, but the songs are very good and the production is excellent. I'd love to see these guys tour once Jason Bonham wraps up his upcoming Zeppelin tribute tour.

Here's the info on Joe...

edit - Holy crap! I totally forgot that Joe was in Bloodline back in '94 as a 17 year old guitar whiz! And I've got that CD, too!

Re: Black Country Communion - Supergroup?

Eh, it's ok. None of it blew me away. The opening to Sistah Jane sounds very reminiscent of the opening to this:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/faNA2ZmZtlA?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/faNA2ZmZtlA?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

But not as good.

Medusa is actually a cover of the title track to Glenn Hughes' pre-Deep Purple band Trapeze's 2nd or 3rd album.

Yeah, Joe Bonamassa is amazing and incredibly well known and liked in the musical community. He's easily my favorite blues artist since SRV.

Somehow I missed hearing about this band. I'm not a fan of Glenn Hughes, but his voice isn't too distracting to me on this stuff. Definitely enjoying it, thanks for posting.

Re: Black Country Communion - Supergroup?

Just got round to listening to this album. And I love it. Hughes has always had one of the greatest rock voices around in my opinion. If not for his various and well-documented demons he could have done so much more.
First time I've really listened to Bonamassa, and he blows me away. Especially on "Song Of Yesterday".
