Starting guitar lessons - recommend me a practice amp?
Hi,
Title says it all. After a messing around on my own, I've decided to take lessons to ensure that I'm not picking up any bad habits. I'm not going to be playing in a band anytime soon, so I just want something small and cheap for practice that I can lug to my lessons. I'm playing a MIM telecaster, if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance! |

A small modeling amp should suffice. That way you can get a lot of bang for your buck and experiment with a ton of different sounds, effects, amp models, etc.
You might want to take a look at the Line 6 Spider IV 15W model. $99 at American Musical Supply. Great for starting out. |

Love my Vox Valvetronix. 100% Analog pre-amp, 22 amp models, 12 effects. Headphone output.
30 watts is plenty loud for me, It cost me about $250. The 15 watt is about $170. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jLmci_K3CKc?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jLmci_K3CKc?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object> |

I like that Line 6 one for $99 (My neighbor kid has one)
If you want nicer, I would get one of these: Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp All Tube, great clean sound - $250 http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/p...Amp?sku=476326 I have a bigger tube fender amp and would buy one of these for playing at a lower volume... |

I also can't say enough good things about the AC4 TV. A lot of great tube sound in a little box. Easy to drag around or noodling at home.

I have a Roland Microcube and it's awesome.

Vox Pathfinder.
Some guys (myself included), run them through 12" cabinets and gig with 'em. They're that good. |
Re: Starting guitar lessons - recommend me a practice amp?
I just picked up a used Vox Valvetronix 30-watt combo for $99 bucks at GC about two weeks ago. I mainly got it for my daughter who is starting to show an interest in music. Easy to use, plenty of volume, but the flexibility to use headphones is areal plus.

Thanks for all the input. I'm kicking myself for missing out on a local Vox Pathfinder blowout sale. Went with the Roland Microcube for the portability factor, and my instructor agreed that it and the Tele were a nice-sounding combo.
Will definitely be checking around for a Pathfinder, however... |
Re: Starting guitar lessons - recommend me a practice amp?
Wish I had seen this thread earlier; try to keep dust off of your MicroCube because of the pushbutton switches and their tendency to fail.
