Re: Album by Album Thread featuring: The Beastie Boys
Take a look at the "Sounds of Science" liner notes; they say (perhaps tongue in cheek, but what follows makes me think not) that the song sucked, but included it because it's a big part of their history.

I'm a big Beastie Boys fan although my most vivid memories of them were during the Hello, Nasty era. I was about the right age when I really got in to MTV and although I knew of Fight For Your Right and Sabotage it was Intergalactic that got me started on them.
I honestly like all of their albums, but I don't put Licensed to Ill up there with other debut albums from other hip-hop artists like the Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, or Dr. Dre. Those stand the test of time, whereas LtI is just fun to listen to.

Re: Album by Album Thread featuring: The Beastie Boys
My least favorite Beastie album. Though I did get a huge kick hearing No Sleep Till Brooklyn live when I saw them three years ago.

IIRC from the "Sounds of Science" liner notes, wasn't "Fight For Your Right" a parody song from them that spoofed idiotic dumbass rock/rap, but somehow got popular anyhow as a fratboy anthem?
Or was that just Monday morning revisionism on their part?

As far as this album goes, I can enjoy it every now and again, but it doesn't come near any of their albums to follow. As someone else stated, Paul's Boutique is their masterpiece, and personally, Hello Nasty is my favorite. Love everything in-between and after too.

Re: Album by Album Thread featuring: The Beastie Boys
I think it's probably both. I recall an interview somewhere from Kate Shellenbach (original drummer for them in their early hardcore days) where she indicated they all intended the frat-boy aspect (Girls, Fight for Your Right) to be a joke; however, they pretty much got sucked into the lifestyle pretty quick (i.e. pouring beer on women in cages, inflatable penises on stage, this staged fun).

I wonder how many more albums they would have made if they had pursued the public persona depicted here.

This was my first experience with them also. The olders kids would play this and Run DMC's Raising Hell. I still remember the entire bus singing along with You Be Illing.

I guess that's why there aren't a lot of videos from backstage. That was embarrassing.

Paul's Boutique
Original Release Date: July 25, 1989
Fun Fact: During a VIBE interview, Mike D was asked about any possible hesitation he or the band might have had regarding their overt "sampling" of several minutes of well-known Beatles background tracks, including the song "The End" on "The Sounds of Science". He claimed that the Beatles filed preliminary legal papers, and that his response was "What's cooler than getting sued by the Beatles?
Samples:
Spoiler:
Tracklisting:
All songs written by the Beastie Boys and the Dust Brothers.
1. "To All the Girls" – 1:29
2. "Shake Your Rump" – 3:19

4. "Egg Man" – 2:57
5. "High Plains Drifter" – 4:13
6. "The Sounds of Science" – 3:11
7. "3-Minute Rule" – 3:39
8. "Hey Ladies" – 3:47
9. "5-Piece Chicken Dinner" – 0:23

* "Stop That Train" – 1:58
* "A Year and a Day" – 2:21

* "Dropping Names" – 1:02
* "Lay It on Me" – 0:53
* "Mike on the Mic" – 0:48
* "A.W.O.L." – 1:45
It's a coin flip at any given moment whether my favorite album of theirs is this one or the next. I remember being disappointed when I got it because I had heard LtI so many times but, of course, I was eleven years old. Time has improved my taste in music. Notable in that it's truly an album that could not be released today. It would be damn near impossible to clear the samples and insanely expensive.

Re: Album by Album Thread featuring: The Beastie Boys
That said, I really liked the Hey Ladies video when I first saw it, but I never bought the album until I rediscovered them in 1994. I only saw the video once on MTV, and radio in Shreveport, LA, gave the album no play. Of course, nowadays, it (like Auto) bounces back and forth between Check Your Head as being my favorite.
The sampling is obviously exceptional. One of my favorite elements of this album is their rhyme schemes, where they haphazardly speak over each other, utter one word in someone else's phrase. Whereas in later albums (CYH, IC, and HN), they've very separated in their rhymes....Mike D says a verse...Adrock says a verse....MCA says a verse....Chorus...repeat...

I've only recently picked this album up. So far, I'm not very impressed. Better than a couple of their later albums, but it hasn't grabbed me yet. I'll see how things progress.

One of my favorite albums ever...definitely my favorite Beastie album. Love the production....Dust Brothers are amazing. All that being said, I'm another one that wasn't crazy about it when it first came out. Gave it another shot around the time Ill Communication came out and it just clicked all of the sudden. It just sucks it's been stuck in the cd player of my car for the last two years.

Re: Album by Album Thread featuring: The Beastie Boys
Bought licensed to ill when it came out and then didnt buy another beasties album until Ill communication which is probably my favorite album as it came out at a time in my life(high school) when music was pretty important to me. I always loved "so whatcha want" off the album that followed Paul's boutique, just didnt have money back then. When I started buying cd's like nuts I bought Paul's boutique and never was impressed with it. Rarely have I boughten an older release and fell in love with the album. I was late picking up illmatic and probably don't appreciate it as much as others even though I think Nas is one of the nicest mc's. I know Paul's Boutique is the critics' "classic masterpiece" but its pretty worthless to me.

Re: Album by Album Thread featuring: The Beastie Boys
I'll add that I think this is their best album. The Dust Brothers really brought something with this album. It's a wonder because this album could never be made today. The sample-tastic sound has to be heard to be believed.
That said I thought the last 12-minute montage song got old.
Still, my favorite BB album.

Re: Album by Album Thread featuring: The Beastie Boys
The remastered deluxe version adds all of the b-sides and remixes from the four singles released off CYH (Pass The Mic / So What'cha Want / Jimmy James / Gratitude). These are easily their best collection of b-sides and remixes from any era.
21. Dub The Mic (Instrumental)
22. Pass The Mic (Pt.2, Skills To Pay The Bills)
23. Drunken Praying Mantis Style Great track. Includes a bit of Biz Markie freestylin over a Beasties funk-style live jam.
24. Netty's Girl Ridiculous love song sung by Mike D. Check out the video too on this one
25. Skills To Pay The Bills Essential Beasties track. Probably the best hiphop b-side they have. Still played live at shows.
26. So What'Cha Want (Soul Assassin Remix Version) Pretty good remix, that gets great once Cypress Hill comes on at the end for an additional verse.
27. So What'Cha Want (Butt Naked Version)
28. Groove Holmes (Live Vs. The Biz) "live" version of Groove Holmes that has Biz Markie freestylin' again.
29. So What'Cha Want (All The Way Live Freestyle Version)
30. Stand Together (Live)
31. Finger Lickin' Good (Government Cheese Remix)
32. Gratitude (Live)
33. Honky Rink Funny little instrumental that takes place at a skating rink
34. Jimmy James (Original Original Version) Contains the original Jimi Hendrix samples that weren't cleared until after the album release
35. Boomin' Granny Another ode by Mike D...this time...to grannies....
36. Drinkin' Wine
21. Dub The Mic (Instrumental)
22. Pass The Mic (Pt.2, Skills To Pay The Bills)
23. Drunken Praying Mantis Style Great track. Includes a bit of Biz Markie freestylin over a Beasties funk-style live jam.

Re: Album by Album Thread featuring: The Beastie Boys
Pass the Mic and So Whatcha Want are some of their best songs, actually they probably are the best. Once again, I was in HS when this came out. It happened to be more popular with a few of the alternative/emo(before emo was emo) music fans, weezer types. I was late to this one too which as I said usually means I dont fall in love with the album if I come late, no money when I was 14-15 when this dropped. Remember watching the Pass the Mic video on Yo MTV raps. Im not that familiar or a fan of the rest of the album as I used to just play the singles off it. Big fan of the next album though and its what made me a BB fan again. But as I said, I always loved the 2 singles.

Re: Album by Album Thread featuring: The Beastie Boys
"Check Your Head" is a brilliant album and I'd agree, their best. Worth listening to is a fan remix album titled "Doublecheck Your Head" which takes pairs of songs off the album and mixes them together. Quite a few of the mixes off that are more fun than the originals.
