Why isn't Rush in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

I heard the other day the Rush has never been elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, despite being eligible for about 10 years. The reason I was stunned is I just assumed they were voted in sometime in the past decade?

I know Rush has never been a darling of the critics, but they have a very diehard fanbase, so what's the deal????

The same questions can be asked for many bands, including:

KISS
Depeche Mode
The Cure
Chicago
Hall and Oates
Alice Cooper
Moody Blues
E.L.O.
Cheap Trick
Bad Company
Def Leppard
Peter Frampton
Heart
T-Rex
Iron Maiden
Bon Jovi
Journey
Foreigner
Public Enemy
Red Hot Chili Peppers

Because the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a worthless institution.

Re: Why isn't Rush in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Because Rush don't fit any of the standard definitions of rock and roll. They don't sing songs about sex, they're not gritty, earthy or "raw", they're not blasted out of their minds on hard drugs (or recovering middle aged addicts), and they're not outrageous, flamboyant, or otherwise "cool". They have no punk sensibilities, no one at Rolling Stone Magazine ever fantasized about being them, and they've pretty much rejected the rock and roll lifestyle.

They're boring. They're relatively happy, well-adjusted normal guys who haven't let life's roadblocks destroy them. They don't think they can change the world through political ranting. They write songs that Jann Wenner doesn't understand. They don't follow trends. You can't dance to their music.

I am suprised at this list, as most of these groups deserve induction.

Find this list I did in one of these threads....it's about 3 times longer, and worth bands as well.

How'd Genesis get in then?

Out of this list, I can see Heart, T-Rex, Public Enemy, RHCP, and probably Bon Jovi being inducted in the next 5-10 years. The rest of them? Forget it.

Re: Why isn't Rush in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

I liked Billy Corgan's comments in "Beyond the Lighted Stage" about how one day someone will have to answer why Rush isn't regarded as one of the great bands of all-time. What was it he said about the "intelligentsia" ? I didn't even know that was a word

Re: Why isn't Rush in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

BTW, the Hall of Fame is irrelevant if you ever visit the museum. It's one tiny hallway of plaques that amount to 1% of the things to look at in the museum. The memorabilia in the rest of the museum is the reason any music fan should plan a trip there, not for the HoF.

Funny... those are all the reasons why I love Rush.

Also: They're Canadian. Damn flappy-heads.

Re: Why isn't Rush in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Although Rush should be in already, I have no doubt that they will be in eventually. Given the overall downward spiral in quality of new music over the past 2 decades, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is going to run low on new names to induct in about 5 years or so (due to their 25 years since first album rule). Then the Hall of Fame will probably start giving overlooked bands another look just so they don't have years pass by without anyone at all getting inducted.

One of the guys in the band said it best: "It's a much more of an issue with our fans than it is with us."

Who cares...do you actually care about the rock and roll hall of fame? Are you on the edge of your seat in anticipation of going there and participating in that nonsense?

I've been there. Despite the induction nonsense, it's a lot of fun. They have some really cool artifacts.

And when I went, I wore one of my Rush shirts. Got several positive comments from the staff. Even they know they should be in there.

I have one Rush CD in my collection, and it's a home-made set of what I consider to be their best material. I understand why people like them, but they aren't my bag. Sorta like musical masturbation, IMHO.

That said, I do think they deserve to be in the R&RHOF.
I was going to argue your post...until your last statement.

Even people who hate Rush think they should be in the hall of fame. lol.

Just because someone doesn't like something doesn't necessarily mean they can't see the general merit of it. There's a lot of groups I don't personally listen to, but with very few exceptions I wouldn't belittle their inclusion in the HoF.

Actually being "rock and roll" (whatever that even means) is not a requirement for the Hall of Fame. Just look at who's in there who are clearly not Rock:

Johnny Cash? Bob Marley?? ABBA???

(Maybe it should be called the Popular Music Hall of Fame instead)

Both Johnny Cash and Bob Marley were huge influences on Rock music and both clearly deserve to be in the R&R HoF. Abba? I got nuthin'.

Really? I never felt the need to buy their music, but Rush doesn't strike me as a bunch of soulless technicians like, say, Journey. They may be a little cool and intellectual, but they have something to say.

I think songs like "Red Barchetta" and "Time Stand Still" have a lot of soul just as a couple examples.
