Yet Another List. This time Rolling Stone lists what they think are the 100 greatest songs by The Beatles.

Strawberry Fields Forever and Come Together shouldn't be in the top 10. The other ones are good choices, even though my order would be different.

Even though their Top 100 list will have screwy ordering with some major omissions, I think I'd like to pick up this special issue of Rolling Stone because it'll have a lot of great pictures and articles on the Beatles in it.

Ummm... How many songs do the Beatles have? 150? 160?

Limiting it to a top 25 would have made more sense, don't you think?

According to the back of the stereo boxset they have 217 songs.

Such a collossally stupid idea. These magazines sure do love their lists. I'm sure it will sell a ton of magazines. But you can't quantify The Beatles like this.

I'd have a hard time making a list like this simply due to the prejudice of time and hearing a song too often. The Beatles are my favorite band, but I really don't need to hear "Hey Jude" ever again.

I think A Day In The Life sucks! Avant-guard stuff (and I know I probably misspelled it, but you get my meaning).

Now I'll read the rest of the list. I only had to comment on the first thing I saw, which was what Number One.

OK, so the list is for the top half of their catalog, essentially? What's the point in a list like that? Why not, "All of the Beatles songs ranked in order from best to worst?"

A top 50 (at most) would have been OK, I suppose, if they wanted to make a list of the, "Best," Beatles songs...

(By the way, my favorite Beatles song is, "Day Tripper." For whatever that's worth...)

I quite agree. For the past six months or so, I've been truly enjoying, with massive repeating, album tracks from Help! (notably side 2) and Rubber Soul (the tracks that weren't hits). A wealth of Beatles music that casual fans (hits fanatics only) never get to hear.

Telling me what the best Beatles songs are is like telling me what my favorite dream is. You're never going to have the same experience, thoughts and feelings as me so why bother trying to tell me what I should think is best?

A Day In The Life is a little experimental. I certainly wouldn't call it avant-garde. The only thing that really separates it from a regular rock song is the symphony racing to the end. If you thought THAT was avant-garde, you really would hate actual experimental music.

Well, look who said it. The guy obviously has no idea what avant-garde actually means. He just probably had the word pop into his head, then connected it to an experimental song, and viola! - "avant-guard."

But it's true I dislike "experimental music," especially Tomorrow Never Knows. Call me a Beatles-nothing, but I like a lot of their music.

And like I said before, album tracks like I've Just Seen A Face and Tell Me What You See and It's Only Love get more repeat plays than the overplayed tracks like Yesterday, Help! or Ticket To Ride, although they are great songs.

My problem with A Day In The Life is that it's essentially boring (to me). And the orchestration screech-out at the end is irritating (to me). It's the type of song I'll listen to if it comes on the radio and I hadn't heard it in a very, very long time. But I won't put it on my iPod.

Plus Strawberry Fields Forever was released before Sgt. Pepper's, though it was originally intended for Sgt. Pepper's, so I'll give you that one. But looking at the top five, you could flip your question around -- does Rolling Stone realize that the Beatles had albums that came after Sgt. Pepper's?
