Re: artists you like that aren't taken seriously
This one's easy for me: Journey
They're derided as soulless arena rock, but I love their late 70s/early 80s albums. Just good, straightforward rock - and I think Steve Perry has one of rock's best voices. Their earlier albums are also good.
EDIT: I would have also mentioned Hall & Oates, but based on the recent poll here, they're pretty well appreciated.

I'll add Linkin Park. I assure you no one in these parts takes them seriously.

I'd prob say most recently.....Korn. And although I can understand why to a point....I pretty much mention it due to the bashing their new album is taken (not just here but pretty much everywhere) - it definitely doesn't deserver it IMO.
And about Gary Numan....I love this vid:

Limp Bizkit is still one of my favorite bands so they would be at the top of my list. Also add in Linkin Park, Korn, and most nu-metal. It's just a genre I grew up with so I enjoy it.

Snow. Yes, that white guy who sang Informer almost 20 years ago. I own every single album of his.

For instance, I've been on a big Journey kick for the past week, re-exploring all their albums, and loving every minute of it.

I actually like this thread a lot for the honesty and how it's stayed calm - it's pretty cool to see what others like as well (that they may not have mentioned otherwise). Glad to see people like the Numan video as well....I've been starting every morning off at work for the last week with that one blasting.....People I work with like it too.

Oingo Boingo
Outside of Southern California, they seem to be known only for Dead Man's Party and an appearance in Back to School. I love their stuff, and their concerts were amazing.

ABBA
Electric Light Orchestra
10cc
Boston
The Carpenters(best voice in the history of pop music with Karen Carpenter)
All three bands were slickly produced and had amazing arrangements. All were way ahead of their time but sold off as slick pop.

Semisonic was one of the best bands of the '90s IMO, but most people don't know them apart from "Closing Time." Their have a really good catalog of songs though; for instance pretty much everything from their Great Divide album is fantastic.

And if anybody want's a great read on the inner workings of the music industry, I highly recommend reading Jacob Slichter's (Semisonic's drummer) book - So You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star .
