Battle of the Bands #4: Bob Dylan vs. David Bowie - who wins?

OK, here's a tricky one. The most iconic singer-songwriter of the 1960s vs. one of the most creative minds of the 1970s and beyond. Very different styles, yes, but when it comes down to it, if you can choose, who do you prefer? And why?

Battle #1: Led Zeppelin Vs. The Who

Battle #2: REM Vs. U2

Battle #3: Ramones vs. The Clash

Hate Dylan's voice, and love Bowie's, so this is an easy one.

Dylan is amazing, but David Bowie is my all time favorite musical artist, so this is an easy choice.

Both are hugely influential icons, but Dylan stuck to pretty much one style his entire career (as far as I know...not really a fan), while Bowie was always willing to push the limits and try anything. Bowie, to me, is right near, or at, the top when it comes to rock and roll legends.

I went with Bob Dylan. Never much of a David Bowie fan to be honest..

I'll take Dylan. His music will live for a hundred years or more. Even if the recordings are scratchy and the vocals thin, the songs are timeless masterpieces. It's sort of hard to believe there was a time when Blowin' In The Wind didn't exist.

Neither did I, but that doesn't stop me from seeking out music. Some of the best music of all time in this case.

Bowie.

Love both, but Bowie is the man. And with Dylan, so many of Dylan's albums are irrelevant, IMO. And, the Berlin trilogy.

sad choice, because the thought of Bob Dylan playing Like a Rolling Stone live puts an ear to ear grin on my face. The Royal Albert Hall show is probably one of my most played discs.

Re: Battle of the Bands #4: Bob Dylan vs. David Bowie - who wins?

I like some Bowie. I remember his MTV hits growing up, I really liked a couple of his 90s albums, but I've tried to connect with some of his classic 70s albums and failed.

But Dylan is Dylan. For the longest time, I only knew the 60s stuff from his Greatest Hits Volume 1. Then several years ago, I was working nights, my car was in the shop and I was in a borrowed car without a CD player. Driving home at 3AM, Tangled Up in Blue came on the radio. I knew it was Dylan instantly but had never heard that song before. I loved it, and it hit the perfect mood for me driving home that late night/early morning. The next day I ordered the 15 album SACD boxset from yourmusic (at that time I think it was still $4.99 per disc)- a slight overreaction, but the best money I ever spent on music in my life. I've gone on to get the Bootleg series and many other albums not included in that boxset.

It's an easy decision.

Bowie slightly. Love them both, but I think Bowie's arsenal contains more consisten quality than Dylan's.

I'm sure David Bowie would pick Dylan on this one.

Well, technically it should be Robert Zimmerman vs. David Jones.

Obviously both are hugely influential and talented artists but I've got to give Dylan the nod if for nothing else than the longevity factor.

Dylan is still producing masterpieces like Love and Theft and Modern Life while Bowie hasn't put out a truly great album since 1980's Scary Monsters.

Dylan...and it's not even close. Bowie has always been a bit too weird for me, while Dylan has created some truly timeless albums. Classicss such as Blood on the Tracks, Bringing It All Back Home, and Blonde on Blonde never seem to lose their alure, no matter how many times I give em' a spin.

Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde On Blonde, John Wesley Harding and Blood On The Tracks are the five greatest albums ever recorded. Dylan gets my vote.

Strange pairing.

I could see Bowie vs. Elton or Dylan vs. Springsteen.

But I'll go with Dylan for sheer historic value.

It's like comparing two different eras of music that isn't even similar.

Thats just so sad, & a big reason why modern mainstream music is so pathetic. Both were before my time also, but Dylan is my all-time favorite artist & Bowie is a pure mad-genius. There is a world of briliant music, film, art, etc etc outside of the limited world of "your time".

Oh yeah, & Dylan wins, but Bowie is still awesome. Most people just don't realize how important & influential Dylan is to American music, one can easily make the claim he is the most influential American musician of all-time.

And one can claim Bowie is the most influential musician of the 20th century, or at least the second half of it.

I think you accidentally landed your TARDIS in some alternate universe where Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Elvis Presley, and Hank Williams were never born. And you may have lost the city of Liverpool, too.
