REM. Their albums of late just don't matter anymore.

I disagree. If they can still perform and sound good, I say go for it. Am I supposed to stop listening to my Heart CDs and "move on" to someone like Gaga?

As a long time R.E.M. fan, this breaks my heart a little. However, I'm not disagreeing although I thought their last effort showed a spark missing in the two previous.

Heart are AWESOME! I remember picking up a CD of a live performance called "The Road Home". An absolutely fantastic live performance! Since then, I've wanted to see them, but the stars have never aligned/I've never made a concerted effort. They're coming around this summer and I need to get there. I've not only heard, but heard from others I know, that Heart are fantastic live.

The Rolling Stones are definitely a Love/Hate thing, you either love 'em or you hate 'em (or you love to hate 'em). IMHO, they had some good stuff pre-Angie, but I heard so much Angie on the radio in '73 that I swear if I ever hear it again I'll either puke or throw the radio out the window. Ever since then anything they make just grates.....badly. And they just keep pumping it out...

We'll just have to agree to disagree... -kd5-

Sounds of the Universe is an awesome album, as was Playing the Angel. Exciter was pretty weak, but they're still holding their own after nearly 30yrs.

I like the counter-response by HokeyBoy. As we all know, quality doesn't have anything to do with sales numbers, although record executives don't give a damn about that. They would choose the Jonas Brothers over Dio. In other words: choosing "flavor-of-the-moment" crap that makes a buck over "highly-regarded longitivity" quality that may not make a buck.

You do realize that the music business is actually a business, right?

Thank God for indie rock! One of the few genres where the business doesn't stick it's ugly head in very often!

Re: Musicians you wish would retire

Weezer - Rivers should make his laundry soap ad gingles under a different name. Weezer used to be cool, sigh

Aerosmith - Mostly because it seems like most of the guys in the band would prefer to play blues in smaller clubs now anyways. I'd go see any combination of them that didn't involve Steven Tyler before I'd see them as a whole now

The Doors if they're still performing under the name, I have no idea

As long as they still draw a crowd and make money why retire?

It's a business, plain and simple. "Indie" rockers need to eat too. It's the same scenario that plays out in the film industry.

People got all butthurt when Green Day and Nirvana "sold out" years ago, but dollar to donuts says that in the end, they wanted to get paid for their work.

But you go ahead and continue to steal your music though the intertubes...nobody should be paid for their art/work, right?

Who cares? They still put on a hell of a show. Paul Stanley at 58 out-performs people a third his age. It's incredible

Bullshit. independent business is still business.
Everyone needs to eat, everyone needs to make a living.
Anyone who does music for a living, music is their business. Doesn't matter if you're KISS or Guided By Voices

Re: Musicians you wish would retire

This thread is like visiting an old folks home.

"I haven't liked music in 10 years."
"Oh Yeah, well I haven't liked music in 15 years."
"These kids today with their guitars and rock n' roll music, it needs to go away!"

I guess that's why GBV decided to put an end to their franchise?

You DO notice that GBV have never had to change their music because some record industry tool told them to, correct?

Once "C'mon everybody, you know the words!" enters their vocabulary and they have the audience sing most of the songs. See: Neil Diamond.

You know, I saw Eddie Money a few years ago doing an opening set, and the fucker didn't sing any of the choruses of his most famous songs. "Take Me Home Tonight", "Two Tickets To Paradise", "I Think I'm In Love", etc. every time the chorus came, he didn't sing a word but pointed the mic at the audience. They were agreeable at first, but over time people were getting annoyed. I hate that schtick. If you don't want to sing your damn hits, fine, but don't go on tour. Then again, if you've sunken into the depths of absolute cultural irrelevancy, you might want to seem more enthusiastic over your most recognizable artifacts.

Sorry if I've offended any of the Eddie Money "deep cuts" aficionados.
