Any Florence + the Machine fans around here?

Late bloomer here listening to the album since Alt Nation started playing a song off it recently, and it's pretty fantastic. The lead singer (Florence Mary Leontine Welch) sounds like a cross between Kate Bush, Sia, Siouxsie, Dido (to name a few). And the production of the album goes from lush to bombastic/theatrical. In a great way! Highly recommended.

I dig them, don't agree with your comparison of who the singer sounds like though (especially Dido that makes no sense). She has an incredibly strong & powerful voice with a tremendous range (listen to Dog Days are Over) to see what I mean.

I know she has range. That's why I compared her to those singers. And sorry, but I hear Dido in certain songs when her voice drops to a quieter tone. I even read that comparison in a review somewhere and here:

I don't really know Dido, I just know that one song by her & never really saw the similarity based on that. Doesn't matter, we both agree she has a great voice.

Agreed. Her pipes just blow me away.

This band is probably my favorite new discovery of the past couple of years. I played Lungs more than any other album last year. Love it. And the non-album tracks that have been released thru various means are just as strong as the album tracks. Can't wait for a new album.

Great stuff, I bought tickets to see her when she plays down here next month as apparently she's amazing live.

I'd have to say her voice reminds me the most of Sinead O'Connor with a bit of Kate Bush, myself.

This is one of those discovery albums. The more I listened to it the more songs I got hooked into. "Blinding" has become one of my favorites, but the whole album is amazing and tops my list of the best of 2009.

Loved their debut album, was kinda eh on their 2nd. This new song sounds promising though. Looking forward to hearing the full album.

Listened to the first few tracks on the new album today and think they're great. This seems to be a progression for the band and feels like a hit.

Loving the new album so far.

All the songs are good, but my favorite today is Delilah. That could change of course tomorrow.

I loved Lungs, and thought Ceremonials was a lesser-but-still-great effort, but this new album makes me yawn. The magic just isn't there this time. I'm struggling to find the hooks, which makes the album a bit of a "samey" experience all the way through. I'm hoping over time it'll improve to my ears.

Re: Any Florence + the Machine fans around here?

Actually, I'm not a fan. Which is weird, because they check almost every box on my "Bands I Love" list: English? Check. Female lead singer? Check. I've even had Facebook friends from all over the planet (and from different social circles) send me messages to tell me about them, saying they heard them on the radio or Spotify or whatever and thought of me. But they just don't do it for me... and I actually feel a bit bad about it for some reason.

Is this a threadcrap? 'Cos it wasn't intended as one.

I got Ceremonials from Google a little while back. It's not something I ever would have picked up myself, but I do like it quite a bit.

Florence and the Machine is one of my favorites--wasn't aware they had a new album.

I agree, it sounds like variations of the same song 12 times in a row.

Not necessarily a terrible thing. I remember I made the exact same comment about this album in 1987 :

Re: Any Florence + the Machine fans around here?

I like the album.

Love:
Ship to Wreck (best song on the album)
What Kind of Man
Delilah
Third Eye (honestly this one is a bit of a guilty pleasure)

I also think the 3 bonus tracks Which Witch, Make Up Your Mind, and Hiding are all great.

Everything else is kind of meh.

Solid effort overall.

Re: Any Florence + the Machine fans around here?

The new album, High As Hope, came out last week. Similiar to the previous album it's less anthemic but still has a big sound.

I really do like the lead single Hunger... which is probably the best on the album.

Here’s a rebuttal three years in the making:
Bullet the Blue Sky and Running to Stand Still couldn’t be more different. The drastic juxtaposition is the whole point.

Also, the last two tracks are very different than the rest of the album.

Re: Any Florence + the Machine fans around here?

I have not heard from her in almost a decade or her songs don't chart anymore but she has a new song
