I've come to terms with the fact that no one can ever have a neutral conversation on music. One person always ends up coming across as a douche. Unless someone is a really good friend, I never talk about it.

I may hate a lot of music, but I LOVE much more music than I hate, and I love it more fervently than the average person might love their favorite music - how is that being a snob?

A true music snob is an incurious person who doesn't dare to expand beyond what they already hear in everyday life - people not willing to seek out music themselves.

But then these are the people that throw around the word "snob" and use it on people who have encyclopedic knowledge about music.

It's classic reactionary behavior, also seen in politics: someone who is not informed belittling someone who is, when it should be the other way around.

I have been guilty of criticising someone's taste in music until I finally realised that art is way too subjective to comment about it to someone that may make them react in such a way that they call you a snob. Instead of what you said to your co-worker, you should have offered to bring in some music you considered "real country" and let them make their own choice. There are lots of things I don't like in the art world...many things I wouldn't even call art...but there will always be someone who does like and revere it. Life is definitely too short to try and argue a point about what is and what isn't. Instead use your time to introduce that person to something you like and enrich their lives in the process.

Not to sidetrack this thread but they're probably on par with one another at this point. The past couple of Foo albums have been so boring. Lame arena rock type stuff. Dave only seems to be energetic on other peoples albums these days. He has said that the next Foo's album is going to be the "heaviest yet" though, so we'll see.

If you try to make someone feel stupid over the music they like, you are a music snob. My Ipod has The Replacements, M.I.A., Bioshock 2 soundtrack, Los Lobos, X, Elvis Costello, Radiohead, The Decemberists, Wilco, R.E.M., etc. many critically acclaimed works of music that sold little appeared on many top ten lists, I love them they got me through some rough times. But when Britney Spears, Avril Lavegne's first CD, Van Halen, appear when I shuffle the music, I have a tendency to turn the music up a little louder. I like what I like and allow other people to like what they like and I enjoy their company a little bit more that way. Had to go through my music snob phase and miss out on some cool people, some cool parties, and hitting the posterpedic with some attractive women to realize it was getting me nowhere.

I wear being a music snob proudly. Honestly, in seven years of being here, I've never seen anybody talk about music they like without having to cringe after reading it.

Look, I think Nirvana is a highly over-rated band that got famous for doing the same thing as lesser known groups like The Pixies and Throwing Muses.

But there's no way in hell that the Foo Fighters are a better band. To me, they represent everything that went wrong with alternative rock in the late '90s.

"Music snob" = someone who is so insecure in their own opinions that they feel the world will implode if everyone else doesn't share them, one way or another.

I'm a fan of Willie Nelson and Kenny Rodgers and (maybe David Allen Coe and) Johnny Cash and Ice Cube and Ice T and Eminem and Clutch and Deftones and Grieg and Tchaikovsky and while I hate jazz, I've travelled a ways to see Buddy Guy and BB King. And pop has it's edge too - try Fountains of Wayne. Every genre has it's imitators - it is up to the listener to go for something else. And my choices aren't exactly that far from the mainstream...

Sounds close to what I would define it as but just add that they probably believe they're doing it for their love of music.

I just like what I like and if you agree/disagree, I couldn't really care less.

I am pretty opinionated about music and like to think I have eclectic tastes, but the truth is, I primarily only listen to Rock N Roll and its various subgenres (with some notable exceptions). Most of the bands I listen to are popular, but not stadium filling popular.

Opinions can be right and wrong, but not really when it comes to personal preferences. It isn't objectively true that Lady Gaga makes terrible music (I happen to like a number of her songs very much) any more than it is objectively true that Nickel Creek is the best band ever.

GreenVulture, maybe that last part sounded a little snobbish but I don't see how that would make me a snob. And what it comes down to is that because I listen to music she's never heard of she assumes I'm doing it to be cool or different, in essence, a music snob.

I can't help it if my tastes are far superior to hers. :D

I loves me some Hank Sr. That guy was an amazing singer and an awesome songwriter. Like most people here, I have what I think is wide ranging tastes. Love country, old school hip hop and just gotten into opera and listening to a lot of Nat King Cole and Nirvana lately. I like to believe that every genre has something to offer and honestly, it makes me sad when people dismiss whole genres.

RagingBull80, I do think that some people (maybe just the smart/curious ones) venture to explore artists after getting a taste of a genre. Ryan Adams and Cowboy Junkies brought me to Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn etc. Springsteen brought me to the Clash, then the Sex Pistols, etc. So maybe your co-worker's love of "new country" will take her to the good stuff.

This reminds me, I met this woman who said she was a songwriter. "Walking After Midnight" was playing and I said that, you know, that's a wicked song, etc. She said she didn't like country music. (This, again, made me sad. Musicians of all people, in my opinion, should be exposed to all types of music). So I said, really, *all* country music, "you hate *all* country music??" She said, "No, I like country-folk." I said, "Like what?" She said, "Like CCR."

Bwah ha ha.

I couldn't stop laughing. I had to phone all my friends who are just as passionate about music so we could have a good laugh.
