Prince (and related) Album By Album: Prince
I guess I'll make a separate thread per album considering it wouldn't allow me to change the title of the thread and it was stuck on "For You", but oh well...
He would still be one album away from the album that truly established him, but his second album from 1979 was the one that gave him his first taste of real success.

Prince is the second album by Prince, released on October 19, 1979. It was a quickly written album in reaction to his debut For You. The album needed to have hits and sell well to make up for the blown budget on his first release. Worries were stifled with the success of the lead single "I Wanna Be Your Lover", which reached #1 on the R&B chart and nearly broke the top 10 on the pop chart.
"I Wanna Be Your Lover" opens the album, followed by the guitar-based rock and roll number "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" The minimalist disco funk number "Sexy Dancer" comes next, featuring a piano solo and screams by Prince. The pace is slowed down by the romantic ballad, "When We're Dancing Close and Slow."
Side two opens with another ballad, "With You". The song was later given to protege Jill Jones for her eponymous 1987 album. "Bambi" follows, full of blazing electric guitar. Once again, the pace slows with the ballad "Still Waiting", stating Prince is not too young to know what love is. "I Feel for You" was notably later recorded by Chaka Khan, and helped revitalize her career. The album closes with a final ballad "It's Gonna Be Lonely".
Overall, Prince is more diverse, and was more well-received than For You, reaching #3 on the R&B charts, and reached gold status, but Prince's cult following did not begin until his next album, Dirty Mind.
Prince also toured as the opening act for Rick James in support of the album.

Yea I love it of course. I recently came across the City Lights bootlegs which are in this era of Prince 1980 Atlanta show is the one that comes to mind. It blew , I mean BLEW my mind the first several times I listened to it. Even the way he interacts with the crowd is mind blowing, it's like nothing else you've ever heard him do. I don't really listen to any of the studio albums much anymore(I played them all 3 billion times) so getting new bootlegs is what keeps me a fan.
Anyway between the city lights boot which are 80-83 era and couple rehearsal dvd's I got from the same time period it likes makes me a fan all over again. I hadn't seen anything like that rehearsal dvd I got before ever, it was mind blowing as well. So those aren't the album I guess but they are the material from it. So forgive me if I go on about bootlegs all the time but like I said I really hardly ever listen to the studio tracks anymore.
The tracks themselves are amazing. It's almost a perfect album. Only the track With You is weak if you ask me. I can see how some wouldn't care for When we're dancing close and slow but I see it as the beginning of all those killer prince ballads, and in the end I like it. But With You is just plain weak in every way I think. Every other song is classic and would listen to from time to time.

Very underrated Prince album. I love it. The only gripe I have with this album is that the solo to "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" fades out right when the double harmony's kick in. I need the extended mix to that song.
