Re: Recommend some 5.1 audio to me, please...

You can have multi-channel (5.1) mixes on DVD-Audio, SACD and DTS CDs. There are also dual discs with the 2.0 CD on one side and multi-channel mix on the other side (Dolby or DTS). Unfortunately, they are getting fewer and far between.
Some personal favorites:

The Doors remixed catalog
Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon (SACD)
Elvis 1s (think that was the name)
BT This Binary Universe (unbelievable videos also included)
Depeche Mode (Music for the Masses, Violator)
Zappa Quadiophiliac
Chrystal Method Legion of Boom
And of course, the Beatles Love

Very fond of the recent re-release of In the Court of the Crimson King in 5.1. Also thought the SACD Stones releases were quite good (esp. Let it Bleed).

Beck's Sea Change (either the SACD or DVD-A) is the most amazing 5.1 mix I've ever heard. The SACD is ridiculously expensive, but the DVD-A can be had for around $25 or $30.

I'm also a big fan of the Flaming Lips releases as well as Steely Dan's Gaucho SACD.

Re: Recommend some 5.1 audio to me, please...

One thing that's important to note is that most DVD-A's carried either a Dolby Digital or a DTS 5.1 track, but SACD's do not. So you'd need a dedicated SACD player, while DVD-A's compressed 5.1 tracks are playable on any DVD player.

I really liked some of the early Elton John SACD's. Honky Chateau in particular sounds amazing in 5.1.

That Talking Heads Brick is pretty spectacular but it's that stupid dualdisc format with a CD on one side and a DVD-A on the other. Before I ditched the format, I had 3 different DVD-A players and none of them could play the advanced audio tracks. But the DD track is still quite good.

And speaking of The Beatles, the anthology DVD's carried some great DTS/DD 5.1 mixes for the songs. This discs default to 2.0 though so you have to change the audio each you load a new episode. I wish these mixes were available as stand alone audio releases.

Bob Dylan's SACD catalog is amazing but pick it up while you can as most of them are out of print now. Also, I heard great things about Elvis' "30 #1s" on the DVD-A format. If money is no object, Neil Young's "Archives, Vol.1" in DVD or Blu-ray is great.

Steven Wilson - Insurgentes
King Crimson - Rereleases that Wilson was involved in.

Agreed, but don't leave out Porcupine Tree's Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun (both CD/DVD packages) and In Absentia (separate DVD-A release).

If you're a fan of Queen there is both "A Night At The Opera" and "The Game."

Yeah, I sold my SACD for a ridiculous amount a few months back.

The Alison Krauss + Union Station SACDs go for ridiculous amounts as well, but the mix on the "Live" disc is great. I am also a big fan of the multichannel mix on the Keane "Hopes and Fears" SACD, which has been creeping up in price as well.

Is Dark Side of the Moon available on DVD-A anywhere? I sold off my SACD player a few years back.

There's actually an unauthorized DTS/Dolby mix out there apparently done by Alan Parsons during the days of quadrophonic LPs . I downloaded it a while back and burned it to a CD. You can read about it here http://just-add-cones.blogspot.com/2...rsons-mix.html

Also available "out there" as a DVD-Audio, supposedly from the Quad master tapes. Sounds phenomenal!
