Rock groups and Rock stars(alphabetical order?)

Does Jethro Tull go under J or T? I figure since its a fictional name and a group name , I would put it under J but Alice Cooper, even though a fictional name, I would put it under C. Elton John would follow under the same category. Does U2 come before UFO even though U2 spelled out would be Utwo?

I would put Tull under "J", and U2 before "Ua".

Jethro Tull is a fictional band name, it goes under J
Alice Cooper is a fictional individual name, it goes under C
U2 can go either before Ua or after Uz (or U1 if that band exist)

In my collection, Myley Cyrus is filed under "C" but "New Kids on the Block" is filed under "N".

I think Myley Cyrus is a "C" as well.

Agreed.

Now comes the PJ Harvey dilemma... And what about !!! or O-+> ?

Dunno why Miley Cyrus was even up for debate, honestly.

Re: Rock groups and Rock stars(alphabetical order?)

Alice Cooper began as a fictional band name and has been in the A section of every store I've ever been in.

When the band broke up in late '73 there was a nasty legal battle over the rights to the name "Alice Cooper". In order for Alice, aka Vincent Furnier(or something like that) to continue as Alice he legally changed his name to Alice Cooper. The other band members were bought out so they couldn't just replace him or start other bands called Alice Cooper.

How about "Hannah Montana", a fictional alias for Myley Cyrus? Do we put it under "H", under "M", or do we file it with our other Myley Cyrus CD's (under "C")?

You should hide it in the closet with yourself (says the guy that has a couple Miley mp3's)

Bands like !!! and O-+> are tough to organize, I would put them either at the very beginning or end.

What about the lyric- the singers name was Alice? Was that written before or after the band broke up?

Is Alice Cooper listed before or after Alice-In-Chains?

Alice Cooper would be under A because they started as a band. The artist formerly known as Prince should go in with the Prince CDs.

before.... It was kind of like Hootie and The Blowfish with people calling the singer "Hootie".

the lyric is "She asked me why the singer's name was Alice? Well listen baby you really wouldn't understand. "

Vincent embraced the name and was called Alice Cooper, eventually it was legally changed as mentioned.

When the band signed with Warner Bros. the label pushed for marketing the singer as Alice Cooper. This, along with Alice being the frontman, created the image in the public's mind of the singer being Alice Cooper. All the attention focused on Alice created the resentment among the other band members that led to the break up of the band. They began to feel they were being treated as a back up band.
Almost like the lyrics to "Ziggy Stardust"

I'm positive there are people who think Jethro Tull is a solo act and Anderson is Jethro Tull. Both bands started the same but a decision was never made to create the image in people's mind that Anderson was Tull.

Re: Rock groups and Rock stars(alphabetical order?)

you lear something new every day. I never knew the history of the Alice Cooper name.

However, I'd still file it under C, as, for all intents and purposes, it has become the performer's name. As for record stores filing it under "A", I've never seen one that does. Is it possible that rw2516 lives in AC's home town?

Never knowing whether to take a Groucho post seriously or not, I think I will...

Luckily, all the HM CDs are considered soundtracks to seasons of the TV show or the concert movie, so they get filed under "H" in the soundtracks section.

Re: Rock groups and Rock stars(alphabetical order?)

So where do you put bands like 3 Inches of Blood? WMP puts them before the A's, but I sort them with the T's assuming they go with Three.

I also keep Alice Cooper with the C's, but I only have a couple of albums after the singer changed his name.

I keep the Steve Miller Band under S

I've never seen Alice in Chains with the hyphens, so Cooper would go before.

Agreed.

If a band always uses the number in their branding, they go with the numbers. The one I've had trouble with reaching a conclusion is Tupac / 2Pac since he's gone by both.

I put the #s at the front, so in my collection, 2Pac is first.

This is what I do, too.

As for !!!, I'd put that in the front of the collection, but I suppose you could put it under "C" for "Chk chk chk"

All Prince would go with "P" for Prince.

I'm trying to think of another oddball one like this and I can't for some reason...

Symbols/Misc -> #'s -> A-Z

Although since she spells it with "!" does it go before Pantera, after Primus, or before Pink Floyd?

Re: Rock groups and Rock stars(alphabetical order?)

Numbers should go under the first letter of how you spell that number. So if it's 2Pac, you should put it under "T" for "TwoPac" or "Tupac." If it's 3 Inches of Blood, it would be under "T" for "Three Inches of Blood."

Re: Rock groups and Rock stars(alphabetical order?)

Do you put Aphex Twin and AFX together? Under 'Ap' or 'Af'? And what about Polygon Window and Caustic Window- Do they go under P and C respectively, or should they go with the Aphex Twin discs? Or should they all go under 'J' for Richard D. James?

But, the one that always gave me fits was April March: 'A' or 'M'?
