Need to be schooled on LCD Soundsystem, all I've heard by them is the Daft Punk is Playing at My House track.

12 of the 17 songs on the new Ben Stiller movie soundtrack for "Greenberg" are credited to either James Murphy or LCD Soundsystem for those interested... like getting 2 new albums this year! (the soundtrack came out a few weeks ago)

A New York based collective of musicians centered around noted producer and DFA (Death from Above) Records' head honcho James Murphy. Murphy made his bones producing albums for other people, notably David Holmes (the pretty much classic "Bow Down to the Exit Sign") and Six Finger Satellites. He then started founding his own bands with a bunch of different people most notably Death from Above 1979 . LCD Soundsystem is mostly Murphy with a few key collaborators notably Al Doyle from Hot Chip and ace drummer Pat Mahoney. They're also a crack live band with a few people from other DFA acts. Murphy is a surprisingly persuasive front man for a guy known mostly as a producer.

That's a picture of Murphy on the front of the new album. Several major pop stars have sought out Murphy to work on their stuff. He's also, apparently, doing film scores at this point, he just did Ben Stiller's new movie.

LCD Soundsystem has released two proper albums, one EP that consists of one 45+ minute song (which was not mixed for a run, despite Nike marketing) and a few singles/remixes/EPs. Basically everything they've released is really good, I'd call their second album "Sound of Silver" a modern classic. I'd also say "All my Friends" is easily one of the best singles of the last five years.

I'd go with what Hiro11 said. He's made three albums:

1. LCD Soundsystem
2. 45:33
3. Sound of Silver

The order that I personally like them is 3, 2, 1.

LCD is really hit and miss for me. Some songs I love, and some I just can't get into.

I only really liked Someone Great and North American Scum on Sound of Silver, but I really liked them.

On LCD Soundsystem - same thing - besides Daft Punk is Playing at My House, I liked Tribulations and I'm Never As Tired As When I'm Waking Up...but that's it.

I know what you mean, those were the first two tracks (along with "All My Friends") I really liked off of that album. It took me a while to get into the rest of the album, but I put "Get Innocuous" and "Us v. Them" on a running mix I made and now I think they're great tracks. Also, both sound terrific live. The title track also has a really nice retro-electro groove going. The rest is pretty forgettable, but not bad.

I agree with you on the first album, it's pretty spotty. Although I have a slightly higher number of tracks I like on it: I really like "Losing my Edge", "Disco Infiltrator" and "Beat Connection". "Beat Connection" in particular has a great drum part.

Really not digging Drunk Girls, I hope the rest of the album is better.

Re: LCD Soundsystem - "This Is Happening" - 5/18

This is now streaming at lcdsoundsystem.com

I'm not a super huge fan - I like the self-titled just fine but thought 'Sound of Silver' was a massive disappointment outside of "Get Innocuous!" - but I'm quite enjoying this...

...outside of "Drunk Girls", which is total dreck, and "You Wanted A Hit", which is "Losing My Edge" pt 2.

They are streaming it because it's leaked all over the place. Kind of like what MGMT did.

I need to check this out. Noticed they will be in Austin in June, but also back in October for the ACL Fest.

Re: LCD Soundsystem - "This Is Happening" - 5/18

I'm digging it so far -- it's a good bit more introspectic and mellow than "Drunk Girls" would suggest (that's most upbeat song on there) but I'm getting into it, it's got a very Bowie/Eno feel to it. I love the soft/loud dynamic on "Dance Yrself Clean," the goofy "You Wanted A Hit" and "Pow Pow Pow" which has the feel of some of their earlier work.

I heard it reviewed on Sound Opinions the other week and I thought it was a lost Berlin Trilogy (Berlin Quadrilogy?) album.

After all the positive press I've read on this, I was surprised to find the album kind of blah. Not bad, just not too interesting to me.

Re: LCD Soundsystem - "This Is Happening" - 5/18

Really liking this a lot so far. It definitely owes a lot to the Berlin Trilogy (and Iggy Pop's The Idiot - Somebody's Calling Me sounds incredibly similar to Nightclubbing), but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Agreed, I think a lot of the tracks from it are the most like the early singles like Yeah and Losing My Edge as they share the long drawn out beats + rants format.

Pretty much the only tracks I don't like are Drunk Girls and Sombody's Calling Me, the rest is excellent.

I know it's a minority opinion but I think I like it better than Sound of Silver, which I loved, but this one is a little more fun with not as many midtempo tracks.

Re: LCD Soundsystem - "This Is Happening" - 5/18

I'm neither a fan of Bowie, nor of Iggy Pop, but I did enjoy 'Sound of Silver'...

Hmm, think I'll pass...the songs are way too long for my short attention span
