Your 10 favorite albums from the '60s...

I know the music forum is where threads go to die but what are your 10 favorite albums from the 1960s?

To make it more fun I think you should only be able to list three albums by any one particular artist. Without that stipulation in place this would be a listing of peoples rankings of the Beatles albums.

Here are mine, in order of release:

Bob Dylan - Bringing it all back Home - March '65
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds - May '66
The Beatles - Revolver - August '66
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico - March '67
The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - June '67
Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn - August '67
The Who - The Who Sell Out - December '67
The Kinks - The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society - November '68
The Beatles - The Beatles - November '68
Jethro Tull - Stand-Up - August '69

Honorable Mentions:

The Beach Boys - Smiley Smile - September '67
The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat - January '68
Randy Newman - Randy Newman - June '68
The Rolling Stones - Beggar's Banquet - December '68
The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground - March '69
The Stooges - The Stooges - August '69

Favorites aside, can anyone even name an album recorded before 1965? It's almost as if the '60s was a 5-year decade.

Re: Your 10 favorite albums from the '60s...

Let's see, I'm gonna go back and list the albums that were my favorites in the '60s.

My favorite Beatles albums back then were:
"Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"
"Abbey Road" (or was that in the 1970s? I remember listening to it in high school, which went from 1968-71).

Aside from that, there were:
WEST SIDE STORY - soundtrack/songs by Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY - soundtrack/Ennio Morricone
PLANET OF THE APES - soundtrack/Jerry Goldsmith
ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST - soundtrack/Ennio Morricone
THE WILD BUNCH - soundtrack/Jerry Fielding
FINIAN'S RAINBOW - soundtrack/songs by E.Y. Harburg and Burton Lane

Also, I had an album that was a United Artists release that contained a lot of themes from different movies including THE GREAT ESCAPE, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY and the theme from CLEOPATRA by Alex North, performed by Ferrante and Teicher, which seems odd since neither MUTINY nor CLEOPATRA were UA movies. PHAEDRA was another theme on it, but I can't remember any others offhand. And I loved that album, so it bothers me that I'm not recalling what else was on it.

I loved the SPARTACUS soundtrack (also Alex North), but I didn't get that till well after the '60s.

I had a "Man from U.N.C.L.E." album, but it totally botched the music. It took Jerry Goldsmith's great theme music and gave it a whole different arrangement by someone named Hugo Montenegro. I was as upset as an 11-year-old could get. Related to this, I had an album by the Ventures in which they did their own versions of lots of themes from the era, including the "Batman" theme and the "U.N.C.L.E." theme and I don't recall what else. It was fun and I listened to it a lot, but I don't know if I'd call it a favorite.

I didn't really start buying albums regularly until around 1969 when I got my first job, so I didn't get a lot during the '60s.

That "someone named Hugo Montenegro" was a fairly prolific composer himself. It's too bad you didn't get into his music more. As far as I'm concerned, his scores pretty well defined mid-to-late '60's film and television. His work with the Moog synthesizer helped fuel others' use of it over the years.

I think pre-65 it was more about the hits. Looking back there's a lot of great music: Del Shannon, Ben E. King, The Shirelles, The Shangri-Las, Bobby Darin, Patsy Cline, Ray Charles, etc. But, we all only know the songs through radio, greatest hits albums or oldies compilations. "Runaway", "Stand By Me", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", and so on, are all good songs, but I couldn't tell you what album they originally appeared on, or if the rest of the album was any good.

I'm aware of that, but I always had a bias against him because of what he did to the "U.N.C.L.E." music. And then he had a huge hit with a watered-down version of Morricone's THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY theme. And when Montenegro died in 1981, a number of obits credited him as the composer of the scores for Leone's trilogy. Last I heard, Morricone was still angry about this.

Also, I loved Lalo Schifrin's score for the second Matt Helm movie, MURDERERS' ROW. Did they bring him back for the third and fourth Helm movies? No! They hired Montenegro. And I didn't like those scores. So there!

Re: Your 10 favorite albums from the '60s...

The original Goldsmith scores for Man From U.N.C.L.E. are available from FSM. Volumes 1 and 2. Both are 2 disc sets. Covers all 4 seasons. Goldsmith actually only scored the first half dozen or so episodes of first season. After that other composers worked variations of the basic themes he created.
There's a good special feature about the scores in one of the DVD season sets.

Re: Your 10 favorite albums from the '60s...

This was a fairly tough list to compile as there are many, many more (Dylan, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Joplin, Doors, Peter Paul & Mary, The Mamas & the Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Johnny Winter, The Stones, Beach Boys, CCR, Sly and the Family Stone, etc.) deserving to be on the list. Like others have mentioned I found it humorous that my pre '65 "albums" are mostly collections of songs from a particular year with the exception of Jazz titles.

Anyway... these are the albums from the 60's I find myself revisiting on a very regular basis.

In no particular order - limited to 1 of any performer to insure variety.

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King - 1969
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin 2 - Oct 22, 1969
Chicago - Chicago Transit Authority - Apr 1969
Blood Sweat and Tears - Blood Sweat and Tears - Jan 1969
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced? - Aug 1967
The Beatles - Revolver - Aug 5, 1966
Jethro Tull - Stand Up - Sep 1969
Crosby Stills and Nash - Crosty Stills and Nash - May 29, 1969
It's a Beautiful Day - It's a Beautiful Day - 1969
Allman Brothers Band - Allman Brothers Band - 1969

Re: Your 10 favorite albums from the '60s...

In no particular order, and without mentioning The Beatles, the albums I listen to most from the sixties:

10: The Stooges: S/T
9: The Kinks: Arthur
8. The Byrds: Mr. Tambourine Man
7. Love: Forever Changes
6. Van Morrison: Astral Weeks
5. The Velvet Underground: S/T (3)
4. Neil Young: Everyone Knows This is Nowhere
3. The Who: The Who Sell Out
2. The Grateful Dead: American Beauty (1970?, if so, I'll take "Green River" by CCR, can't forget the Creedence)
1. The Beach Boys: Pet Sounds

...to be honest, I'm more of a seventies guy.

If I had to pick a Beatles album, I'll take "Revolver" (of course). A Stones album, probably "Let it Bleed" (of course). Then I'm missing Hendrix ("Axis..."), Floyd's "Piper", Leonard Cohen's first album, and the entire heyday of jazz. But what the hell.
