Re: New instrument thread (for musicans and wanna-be's)

I put together a pretty crazy drum set between Dec and Feb.

Tama Rockstar Shells:
22x16 bass, 12x9, 13x11, 14x12 rack toms, 18x16 floor tom

Tama Artwood Custom Maple Snare 14x5.5

13" Zildjian New Beat Hi-Hats, two 16", a 18", 20" medium thin crashes, 22" ping/ride, 18" china, 10" and 8" splash cymbals.

Can you tell I dig Neil Peart?

I have close friends and business associates that work for Gibson/Fender/Taylor/etc., and while I certainly take advantage of those connections to get some nice gear at cost, it takes a lot of will-power to curb my appetite.

This is before I added the 18" and 20" crash and the 8" splash...the 18" is now on the stand by the floor tom instead of that 15"

Re: New instrument thread (for musicans and wanna-be's)

My new Epiphone Casino, Inspired By John Lennon model.

Nicknamed "Simone". The tone on her is absolutely delicious, just warm and poppin'. Currently playing through a Line6 TonePort and Spider III amp, but that's temporary. I plan on picking up a Vox AC4TV and getting some real tube action (probably have to order one, as the local stores around here are fresh out of those babies. I got to demo one and was REALLY impressed how much sound I was able to get out of it.)

My next purchase is either going to be a Rickenbacker 360 or vintage Gibson SG, depending on how many Tokidoki purses it takes to get the wife to look the other way.

Nice Casino.

I bought a lefty version of this Martin over the summer. Martin Custom MMV. Full gloss, rosewood back and sides. Made in the USA by hand.

Here's my most recent Gibson Les Paul:

And here's my pride and joy, custom built for me a couple years ago by the good folks over at Taylor Guitars.

That mahogany in that Taylor?

Or is it just the stain/pic?

Hawaiian Koa wood, front/back/sides.

The back of the neck is mahogany.

Ah... I spotted that neck is why I asked. Wasn't sure about the body though, different grain.

One of my Martins is pure mahogany, they no longer make it. The D-17. But I pretty much play it exclusively now as the tone from pure mahogany is so... special I guess.

Re: New instrument thread (for musicans and wanna-be's)

Just got this in January:

It's a Hugh Tracy Treble Kalimba, a traditional instrument of Africa. And it even came with a built in mic plug, which since I had an amp already (for use in a classroom) is really nice.

I can only do a handful of short songs so far, but one of these days I hope to sound like this guy:

And no joke, it looks like that in person - almost like a translucent hologram.

Yeah, while a little dark, mahogany's about the best sounding wood for a guitar. Koa is similar, though maybe a little darker, but the main difference being that mahogany sounds great right off the bat, while Koa wood needs a few years to age and open up - nothing beats the sound of an aged Koa guitar.

Here's my arsenal---nothing too fancy, but nice, solid instruments:

Yamaha SA-1100

Fender 60's reissue Strat, 3-Tone sunburst

Martin DX-1

The D-15's are still made of mahogany. Matte finish though.
