MGMT - Congratulations - Release: April 13, 2010

Tracks:
01. It's Working
02. Song for Dan Treacy
03. Someone's Missing
04. Flash Delirium
05. I Found a Whistle
06. Siberian Breaks
07. Brian Eno
08. Lady Dada's Nightmare
09. Congratulations

Not much talk about these guys around here, but their new album has leaked, and they have it up on their website to stream at http://www.whoismgmt.com/

I've only given it one listen so far, but I like it. It's no Oracular Spectacular, which I wasn't expecting it to be, but I like what I've heard so far.

I'm not saying that the new MGMT record is bad, it's just a mess.

I've listened to it a few times through and just can't wrap my head around it. In the past, that usually means that the album is a grower and that I just need more listens because I don't fully understand it yet. But Congratulations is different because I understood it completely, and maybe even understand what they are trying to do after reading interviews...still, it's just too messy to be effective.

Most second albums are slumps because our expectations are super high, but it seems like they went off the deep end with this one. Too many ideas, too many instruments. Reminds me of the Strokes second album and how they recorded crazy orchestrations and Sgt. Pepper's type tunes. Except the Strokes scrapped all those tunes knowing that they were just being weird because they could.

I'll still listen to it because I'm a fan of the first disc. And I'll try to digest it more. I just wished that they remembered why the song Kids is so good and really hunkered down to create more songs that gave us those types of feelings.

From what I listened to, it sounded more arresting than Oracular Spectacular, which has songs that put me to sleep.

Hmmm, well it's pretty hard for me to take an album seriously when the cover looks like a rejected T&C Surf Designs T-Shirt from 1985.

It's alright. It just isn't anywhere near as distinctive or fun as the first album.

I've listened to the album twice now and I just can't get into it.

I think what made Oracular Spectacular work is that you not only had your selection of fun tracks (such as Time to Pretend, Electric Feel or Kids); but you also had the more expansive tracks (such as The Youth, Of Moons, Birds & Monsters or The Handshake). It was a great mixture that lead to being a more definitive album.

Congratulations does feel more closer to Oracular Spectacular's second half, it just doesn't have the hook the first had. I feel that Of Moons, Birds & Monsters is one of the best tracks Oracular Spectacular had to offer; but there's nothing that comes even close to it on Congratulations.

I think a lot of these "hipster" bands that I enjoy are not going to have successful second albums and I'll have to sift through a sophomore slump full of shit with the hopes the third album gets the bands back to where they originally started. A closer example that I could mention is Vampire Weekend. Really enjoyed their debut album, couldn't get into Contra at all when released earlier this year.

2010 is a huge year in music for me. A lot of current bands that I love are all coming out with albums this year (or hope so, unless they get delayed or have to change labels). So far, I haven't found one that I could recommend yet. :(

Did anybody buy this?

I picked it up yesterday, and I like it pretty well. I need to listen to it more before I decide exactly how much I like it though. I really like Flash Delirium though
