Up In The Dark 9. Valkyrie In The Roller Disco 10. A Bite Out Of My Bed 11. Daughters Of Sorrow 12. We End Up Together You can download "Your Hands (Together)" for free from Matador Records's website: http://www.matadorrecords.com/matabl...her-right-now/ It's interesting. The main songwriter, A.C. Newman, was looking for the middle ground between Led Zeppelin and The Fifth Dimension, I can see that combination in the download. As always, the album features the immense talents of A.C. Newman, Dan Bejar, Kathryn Calder, Neko Case, John Collins, Kurt Dahle, Todd Fancey and Blaine Thurier. It was produced by Phil Palazzolo and recorded at various studios in Vancouver, Brooklyn and Woodstock New York, and oh man, do we love it. Together is the 5th album by Canadian-US collective The New Pornographers, featuring Neko Case and Destroyer’s Dan Bejar, in addition to bandleader and chief songwriter A.C. Newman, who All Music Guide says “in a perfect world, would be our Elton, our McCartney”. Playing to all the New Pornographers strengths, Together combines the freewheeling, glammy spirit of their debut Mass Romanticwith the very personal, emotional songwriting of their most recent material. As a result, it’s an album that aims to please, as exciting for the New Pornographers obsessive as for casual new listeners. Stunning ballads like “My Shepherd” and “Valkyrie In The Roller Disco” are among the most beautiful melodies Newman has ever written, and singles “Crash Years” and “Your Hands (Together)” rank among faves like “The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism” and “The Laws Have Changed”. Vocalist keyboardist Kathryn Calder’s voice has never integrated so well with Case’s, and Bejar’s three contributions are probably his catchiest and least disjointed. Newman says he’s always had a dream of finding the middle ground between Led Zeppelin and The 5th Dimension, which isn’t a bad way to describe Together’smix of decep- tively complex songwriting with pop hooks and arena-rock power. This is one of the great bands of the last decade at the top of their game. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...oryId=98679384 Another interesting thing about this album is that if you order the LP you get a code for downloads of the songs. |

Re: New Pornographers - Together (May 5, 2010)
yea I was going to ask about Arcade Fire, I hadn't heard about a new album coming out this year. If that's true I'm excited.
Can't wait for this album either, big fan of NP. Radiohead is also coming out with a new album, let's not forget one of the greatest bands ever! |

This is common practice for a lot of labels. Matador does this for just about every release.

I'm a big fan of Neko Case, but I've never given these guys a listen. Any recommendations on what to start with?

Re: New Pornographers - Together (May 5, 2010)
Start at the beginning (Mass Romantic) and work through the albums. Neko shines brightest on the earlier albums IMO.

Re: New Pornographers - Together (May 5, 2010)
See I'm more a Dan Bejar fan myself, but appreciate the Neko action in there too.

She plays guitar on "My Shepherd".

Re: New Pornographers - Together (May 5, 2010)
Got my LP from Matador Records yesterday. Very nice... track listing is slightly different on the vinyl (side 1 ends with "Valkyrie In The Roller Disco" after "Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk"), though the download from Matador is in the CD running order as listed above.
It's a great record. "My Shepherd" is the only clunker, I think, but I'm a NPs fanboy to the n'th degree, so they can do almost no wrong in my eyes. So many great melodies. |
