Spotify is the shit. Being able to pick an artist and have 95% of their available music at your fingertips is awesome. I'm in the same boat as brianluvdvd. This app is so good that I'm debating whether I upgrade to premium plan. $120 bucks for the whole year to have access to pretty much any song you want is unbelievable to me.

I have a ton of music on my iPhone and now I don't have to fill it up anymore.

i just did

my slacker radio premium free month expired and i needed an ad free source of baby music. $10 a month for each one made it an easy choice

thanks, good deal since i bought my palm pixi for $32 just as a music player and mp3 player, and this will fit very nicely as an mp3 player.

btw, if you have spotify offline, and your premium subscription expires, are the songs still usable offline?

So, it depends. If you have songs cached to any device, Spotify requires that you go online within 30 days to verify that you're still a Premium user. So, if you cache those songs 1 day before you cancel your Premium sub, then they'll stay on your device for 29 days past your subscription only if you keep it in offline mode. If you go online, it'll recognize that your Premium subscription is done and will remove those files.

No. You will never be forced to pay for a subscription. That said, the European users have seen limitations put in place that will most likely come to the US users as well. Specifically the 10-hours per month streaming limit and also the 5-plays per streamed track. So, if the European users stream a track more than 5 times, then they can no longer listen to it unless they import a local MP3 or buy it online (anywhere) and import it. Again, for a FREE service, those limitations are pretty reasonable, especially if you're using the service to discover new music anyway.
I've used Spotify for well over a year and a half now, and I think I've only listened to a handful of albums more than 5 times. There's just too much music out there. Plus, those limitations are removed when you become a Premium user.

my concern was i wanted to use my device cached when i go on vacation, and might not think about going near a wifi source for substantial time. kinda sucks, but i understand their policy, i just have to make sure to connect the device before i go on vacation, and then find some free wifi somewhere every few weeks.

I just signed up for premium, the android interface isn't very user friendly, but works. I cached some songs too try it out, probably a weak Internet connection, was only gets around 5mbps on mobile broadband. Btw, when looking at songs, is there a way to select songs to add to a playlist, when I look at an album, I could not figure it out on how to add just one song instead of the whole album.

On the iPhone version, if you swipe on the song it opens up some options, including Add to Playlist.

On the Android version, you currently only have two options:
A. "Star" the song, so it gets added to your Starred playlist. You can then open that playlist, long-press on the song, and put it in another playlist.
B. Play the song, then press the little "i" icon, then Add to Playlist.

As soon as they update the Android app to match the iOS app, then it'll be easier... but like most companies, they're focusing on iOS first because they have more people using Spotify on their iPhones.

Well, Spotify came along at the perfect time for me. I'm getting married in October, and me and my fiance currently live around two hours away from one another. We're planning for the wedding and everything, and this has helped beyond words with planning the songs that we are going to play at the reception. I started a playlist for just the two of us to work on, and it has been great. That alone has won me over.

Don't forget to add the subscribers of that playlist to your Spotify social list. That way, you can see our public playlists as well. Which reminds me, I still need to migrate all of my Spotify UK playlists to my US account. :D

First of all, a belated thanks to SomethingMore for the invitation. I'm just now starting to dig into Spotify and play around with it.

So, each year since 1999 I've put together a Christmas CD for my friends and family. I figured it'd be neat to make a playlist containing every song I've used over the years. Spotify has probably about 60% of them, which isn't bad, considering how many songs there are on those discs.

But I have some questions about the icons it uses. (Spotify's help section was of no help.) I know if a track is greyed out, it's a local file. And I take it from earlier discussion in the thread that the note icon means the same thing. So, what does this pink lightning bolt thing mean?

Another newb question: for free users, is it only 5 plays of a song forever or does it reset each month?

The DVDTalk playlist is a great idea. It kind of reminds me of when we did the whole mix CD thing here. (Remember that?) Anyway, I just added my favorite bluegrass cover song. I'm JMBLYA over on Spotify, btw.

Lastly, if there's one thing I've learned by browsing for songs, it's that the karaoke/soundalike/shitty cover industry hasn't taken much of a hit from the recession, apparently.

I can't say I've seen that little logo before. Can you tell me anything more about those tracks? Are they also local files? I looked up one of them ("Everybody wants to see the l..." which I assume is "Everybody wants to see the lights" by Kevin McKinney?) and I don't see that icon.

Sadly, forever. That said, this limitation shouldn't exist for new USA users until after your first 6 months.

I think the DVDTalk playlist is great, too. ;) But, I think the users here should start creating their own "Mixtapes" to share with everyone, like the Mixtape Project you mentioned.

That shit is all over iTunes as well. I remember when that song by Kid Rock that became a big hit a few summers ago (the one that samples Sweet Home Alabama), there was a "tribute" version on iTunes because Kid Rock wouldn't license his own track to Apple.

At first, I thought it had to do with marking a track as played, but since you've never seen it, we can rule that out. Plus, I've played "The Gardner" twice (and I'm digging it!)...no icon. I don't already have that track in my music library, but I do have all of the tracks above that have that icon. All of the tracks above without the icon, I don't happen to own.

When I first installed Spotify, it scanned my iTunes and other local music. The thing is, I keep the vast majority of it on an external hard drive, but I don't always have it connected to my laptop (like right now). So maybe those are local tracks that can't be found, so Spotify uses its "copy" when I play it. I dunno.

BTW, that is indeed Kevin McKinney's "Everybody Wants to See the Lights". Great song. I led off last year's Christmas CD with it. I even made a little slideshow with the song:

I also recommend his "Summer Plans" off of the same album. I despise summer and that song pretty much sums up my feelings. :)

That's a good idea.

I remember that. There was some controversy because people thought they were buying Kid Rock and got pissed when they realized it wasn't his song. Last year I had a free "100 track" trial at emusic (a sweet deal, this was before they changed their pricing structure) and it was the same way there. I guess the soundalikes' market consists of a healthy mix of the easily confused and those that just don't care about not getting the original.

Have any of you been able to compare Spotify to MOG?

I thought about trying Spotify, but I don't like the idea of having to download a client to my computer and sync to transfer music to a mobile device. MOG is browser based for the computer and lets you download music (at 320 kbps) directly to your phone through an app. So, far the selection at MOG is pretty amazing. I've been able to find just about everything I've tried through a search except for some early albums from The Kinks.

I also like that MOG offers a free 14-day trial for either their $4.99 (computer only) or $9.99 (computer and mobile device) services. I've been using it for a couple of days, and I'm hooked.

Am I missing something about Spotify that makes it a better alternative for the premium ad-free plans?

I think Spotify's got a better overall track selection than MOG.
