Tried the Running feature over the weekend. Worked exactly as intended -- it matches your running tempo and keep music at the same pace. My only quibbles:

-- Only song snippets are played, would like to hear the whole tune (this is understandable since often songs change beats at the beginning and/or end)
-- It would be nice to use your own playlists instead of the pre-canned ones

This is... interesting. Surprising? Kind of, I guess...

I mean... I always kind of assumed metalheads listened to music more frequently than anyone else... but I never thought they'd actually outdo pop music for global numbers.

I would have that Pop would be number one.

Spotify has changed their Family Plan. Instead of an additional $5 per month per user, you get up to 5 users for $14.99. It basically finally matches the Apple Music plan.

They can do all these wonderful things but the intricate zen-like skill of SORTING YOUR PLAYLISTS IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER? That's just beyond the reach of mortal men...

It's not What music is listened to more than any other?. That's not what the question asked. It asked: What genre of music is listened to exclusively / in isolation? Which genre has the most fans that only listen to that genre?

Metal is not a surprising answer. But it's not #1 for the US.

Ah, thanks! Like I said in my post (a year ago), I did think it was a little odd. Apparently it's because I didn't read the question properly.

Re: Spotify: Everyone Loves Music (or "Streaming is the Future")

This methodology is infuriating in its lack of detail and precision.

https://insights.spotify.com/us/2015...fans-by-genre/

To find out, we first identified the “core” artists that, according to The Echo Nest (a part of Spotify), are most central to each genre, starting with the big ones, on a global level. Then we did the same thing with local genres in various countries around the world. To create a measure of genre loyalty, we divided the number of streams each core artist had by their number of listeners. All of the charts are normalized against the genre with the loyalest fans.
That doesn't show loyalty, that shows lack of diversity in the artist base. That's like saying Bob Marley fans are the most loyal because they don't listen to any other reggae when in reality you're talking about college freshmen with Legend in their iTunes collection and nothing else.

Just noticed this was a year old.

Spotify is getting a lot of discussion here!

Re: Spotify: Everyone Loves Music (or "Streaming is the Future")

I just got an email that Spotify is moving to the apple pricing of $15/mo for up to 5 accounts. It doesn't affect me yet, but I might just get my kids an account soon.

For those of you who have switched to a family plan, did the account that moved in lose their music?

So if I want to combine my wife's account and mine into a family plan, will any of us lose our playlists?

I'm not sure how switching works because I had an account before my wife had one. I just added her to my account. All of her playlists remained unchanged. She still has a separate login. She had a free account before. I think you should be fine.

Juggalo is considered it's own separate genre? God help us.

The Black Keys have agreed to allow their music on Spotify. Good to see some holdouts ending, instead of going the other way.

Holy shit, some of the ads make me hair-pullingly irate. "DJ Khalllleddd! Igotdakeyzkeyzkeyz, Igotdakeyzkeyzkeyz!" Fuck off with your brain-damaging, sanity-destroying noise.

Is Spotify too unsophisticated to tailor ads to the music that is in one's playlist? The ads they play are more likely to make me dump Spotify entirely.

Yeah, you should pay the $15 a month for the 6 accounts if you value your sanity.

No, ParryD, I'll never pay a penny for it. I'd sooner go back to Youtube, or just listen to my CDs.

I listen to Spotify all day while at work, and in the car to/from work. I more than get my money's worth, and I get exposed to a lot more new music than I would have guessed.

Are the playlists still randomized on the free site? That's annoying too.

At $10, it was a tough sell for me. At $15 for 6 accounts (I'm using 5 now), it's a great deal. I use it all day also, and I'm always creating playlists for shows that I'm going to see. My kids also use it constantly, and I set up an account for my mom to stream to her Bose SoundTouch box that I got her last year.

Re: Spotify: Everyone Loves Music (or "Streaming is the Future")

It's worth every penny of the $10/month I pay. If I had more people to put on my account (just my wife and I) I'd upgrade to the $15 family deal. But for now, we just share one account, and it's infuriating when I get recommendations with her style of music

Re: Spotify: Everyone Loves Music (or "Streaming is the Future")

I too get good use out of the Spotify. My wife and I use - along with Sleep/Lullabye tunes for the kiddos. With the exception of the random pausing of music when I'm listening on the go because someone turned it on at home, it's not too big of a deal. When the kids use it more, will likely expand to the multi-account.

That's the problem I am running into. The kids kick me off all the time when they are home from school. I had gotten a deal on a year subscription, which runs out in March. I'll upgrade to a family account then.

When I think about how much I used to spend on CDs, Spotify premium is worth every penny. The free version sucks though.
