I use Spotify because I buy music on vinyl. Not all albums come with a CD, DL code, or Amazon Auto Rip. I don't want to go to the trouble of ripping it myself.
And I try to explore new stuff to buy. I've spent quite a bit on physical albums (literally albums) because of Spotify. I think most people, though, don't care about music as more than background noise or a passing thing. That's why a lot of people are somehow still able to listen to FM radio. I guess to gather more support for artists, they should somehow cultivate a greater music culture or something. I think that's unlikely though. |

They're mostly on par. It's all a matter of extra features or capabilities. I like Spotify because they're format-agnostic, but really, the services are identical. I imagine catalogs are practically the same with the exception of specific exclusives.

Spotify is supported on more platforms (I can use it on my Roku, for instance) and has a better overall catalog (Google is still building theirs).
Plus I like the app better. |

Led Zeppelin was added to Spotify today! Just I and II so far, but they are rolling out two a day the next few days until they are all available.

A free Spotify service is also coming, with caveats...
Streaming music service Spotify said it will offer a free streaming product on Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. However, there are a few catches. The tablet app works just like the desktop version, according to CNET, giving users access to specific select tracks. However, the new free smartphone apps offer only a Shuffle service that lets users pick an artist or playlist and hear a stream of shuffled tracks. According to CNET, users can't pick the exact song they want to play right away, and will instead have to shuffle through their playlists. Previously, mobile users had to pay $9.99 per month to access the full slate of Spotify's services. Thus, the service is similar to existing Internet radio services like Pandora and iTunes Radio--although Spotify disputes that categorization. "We don't want to make another radio type service," Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said at an event in New York City on Wednesday, according to The Verge. "We want to make something that's really great--that really fits into people's lives," Ek said. "This is the way the next generation will build their music library," Ek said, according to CNET. "It's not about purchasing one song or other. It's about adding it to a collection." Spotify has 6 million paying subscribers and 20 million active users around the world. A lack of free mobile apps was seen as a factor that was inhibiting the company's growth. Additionally, Spotify announced that Led Zeppelin's music is now available on its service. According to the New York Times, Led Zeppelin's representatives have been in negotiations with various streaming music services since at least January, and Spotify is believed to have beaten smaller competitors like Rdio and Rhapsody for the deal. Meanwhile, Google-owned YouTube was planning to introduce a Spotify-like service before the end of the year, Billboard reported in October, but AllThingsD recently reported that timeframe has apparently been pushed back. YouTube's product, if and when it launches, will join a crowded field of subscription music services that includes Spotify, iTunes Radio, Pandora, Rhapsody, Rdio and Google's own All Access service for Google Play. |

Bumping this thread hoping someone can help me with a problem I've been having.
I've been a premium subscriber of Spotify for a couple of years. Since the new year, the recommendations from the "Discover" tab haven't been working for me. Previously, it would give me a mix of useful recommendations based on all the stuff I already listened to with a few useless "popular near you" and "when you were in high school" recommendations thrown in. But now, all the recommendations from the "Discover" tab are of the useless variety. It's like Spotify completely forgot who I was and I'm starting from scratch. Though I'm correctly logged in (and can see my 2013 "Year in Review" like earlier posters have done). Does anyone know what I'm talking about and how to fix it? In a related area, are there better ways to get recommendations of new music? There are the artist playlists and radio stations. But I'm feeling like I'm missing some obviously superior methods to get exposed to new music that I might like. Maybe other apps that work with Spotify? |

I'm trialing Google Play Music Unlimited. It works great with a Chromecast and it's tightly integrated with my Nexus 5. It seems to work great. Auto playlisting and suggestions seem about on par with Rdio.
You really can't go wrong with Rdio, Spotify or GPUM. |

After accidentally sending my iPod through both a washer and dryer cycle with a load of clothes (HINT: NOT A GOOD IDEA) - and essentially killing it - I have embraced Spotify.
I'm just starting my 4th month of Premium and absolutely love it. The cons are far outweighed by the pros, imo... |
