Not one of my favorite overall albums. It represents Queen's first official attempt to go more mainstream and reach a wider audience. Not saying that they sacrificed quality or anything by doing so, but I definitely liked them when they were creating art, as opposed to just writing songs.

I will say, though, that "It's Late" is one of my top 5 favorite Queen songs ever. Great rocker. Pretty basic song in its structure, and then toward the very end, there's that Brian May "wall of guitar" layering that just lifts you up. Incredible track.

I was a little late to the game for this one and didn't actually get it until I was a teenager in the late 80's. I had the dynamic due of We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions on their Greatest Hits album so why would I need this?

Boy was I wayyyy off on this one. I love this album. You get the one two punch of the double side A singles right off the bat. It takes a little of a nose dive with the hard edge Sheer Heart Attack. don't get me wrong, I like the song at times but it just sounds half baked to me. And those obnoxious whistling/screeching sounds near the end just get under my skin (which is what they are supposed to do I guess). But when that ends and Taylor's massive drums come in at full speed...damn, I love that part. So it is a love hate song for me.

But then the album gets back up to speed with the never mentioned All Dead All Dead and Spread Your Wings which are two back to back greats in my opinion. Then it takes another lull with Fight From The Inside and Get Down Make Love. FFTI is just a rather dull song to me and GDML is just plain obnoxious. The lyrics of GDML are so terrible that they are funny...and I am not sure that is the way Freddie meant for the song to be received. And it is another song with obnoxious sounds mastered way to loud coming your way. Ugh.

But then you have the fantastic finale of Sleeping On The Sidewalk, Who Needs You, It's Late and My Melancholy Blues. I absolutely love these last 4 songs and feel they show Queen's massive range.

So a very hot and cold album for me. Three so-so songs out of eleven isn't a bad ratio and the 8 remaining are some of my favorites. So I have to highly recommend this album in spite of it's few weaknesses. And the album cover and gate-fold art is fucking rad! So there!

My rating: **** out of *****

I really like this album, even though I hate Get Down, Make Love and am really sick of We Will Rock You--it's good but you can only listen to the same song so many times (We Are the Champions is still pretty good though). I guess Fight From the Inside is a bit weak, but not awful (actually just listened to it and thought it was fine). The rest of it is excellent (including Sheer Heart Attack, I love that song, always have). It's Late is especially good. Definitely at least 4 out of 5.

I love everything about this album, and think it easily ranks with Night at the Opera as one of the all time great albums.

I'd rank this as their 2nd best album. I remember buying the album shortly after it was released. LOVED the album artwork.

Get Down Make Love is easily the weakest song on the album, and I'm sick of "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions" - maybe partly due to being overplayed or just the whole anthem feel of it, but they feel less like songs than they do chants.

It's Late and Spread Your Wings are my favorite songs on this album, and Sleeping on the Sidewalk and All Dead are 2 very underrated songs IMO.
Two top-notch romps with My Meloncholy Blues and Who Needs You.

I think the inside album covers for ANATO, ADATR and NOTW need to be included in this threads since they're so damn nice...

If I recall correctly, the insides of ANATO and ADATR are just lyrics.

I love this album. The opening duo of "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions" are two of Queen's most enduring anthems, and the follow-up of "Sheer Heart Attack" lets you know the band isn't messing around. The song is also the best Taylor ever wrote. The gentle "All Dead, All Dead" is a nice counterpoint to the vicious rocking of "Sheer Heart Attack," and "Spread Your Wings" is Mercury at his most sincere. "Fight From The Inside" is the only clunker, a rote rocker that does the band no credit. Things pick back up with the dry funk of "Get Down, Make Love" and the bluesy "Sleeping On The Sidewalk." After a jaunty diversion with "Who Needs You," the band closes the album with another juxtaposed combo: the epic "It's Late" and the introspective "My Melancholy Blues."

If it weren't for "Fight From The Inside," I'd call this the equal of Sheer Heart Attack and A Night At The Opera. It's an overall excellent album that shows the band taking a harder rock stance.

My fondest memories of Queen revolve around this album as I saw them in concert literally days after it was released. "We Will Rock You" was the first and the last song they played, it was great. Now, I'm like some of you, a little tired of hearing it so many times. "It's Late" is also one of my favorites.

Still remember the high tech crown stage at the LA Forum. U2 eat your hearts out.
