Broken Bells - March 9 (Danger Mouse & Shins' James Mercer)

One of the free iTunes songs this week is Broken Bells' "The High Road". Download it before it goes away next Tuesday.

Broken Bells is a new band whose debut album will be released on March 7th, the two members are Danger Mouse and the lead singer / guitarist from the Shins. I've been listening to The High Road quite a bit, a very catchy tune.

The album will be available to listen to at no cost the first week of March through www.npr.org/music

And here is a description of the band from allmusic:

Biography by Heather Phares

Though Broken Bells featured two of the bigger names in indie and alternative music — the Shins’ singer/guitarist James Mercer and producer/multi-instrumentalist Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse — the duo managed to keep their project secret for a relatively long time. The pair were inspired to collaborate when they met at 2004’s Roskilde music festival in Denmark, where they discovered they were fans of each others’ work. However, they didn’t start writing and recording together as a band until March 2008, when Mercer holed up in Burton's home studio in Los Angeles. The duo took a different approach to their work together than they had with their other projects: Burton avoided the sample-heavy style he used on The Grey Album and Beck’s Modern Guilt and played only live instruments, while Mercer broadened his vocal style to include falsettos and deeper registers. Mercer and Burton announced they were Broken Bells in fall 2009, and late that year they released their debut single, "The High Road." Their self-titled debut album arrived in spring 2010.

Been listening to this album non-stop for a while now, going to see them live tonight. I'm sure it'll be a great show. Not a lot of discussion about the record going on here it seems ;)

They just released their new video with Christina Hendricks (of Mad Men/Firefly fame) for The Ghost Inside, easily one of my favourite tracks off the album. Maybe this will draw some more interest, although lately around here I've noticed The High Road has been getting radio plays non-stop, so people are finally catching on.

This album is definitely a grower, it took me a while to really get into it.

But I love it now, very good stuff, I especially like the second half.

Great show last night - Broken Bells tore through their entire album and a couple of covers in a very tight hour long set. Mercer sounded great and recreating the album sounds live with 7 guys onstage and numerous instruments was fantastic - some versions even bettered the album IMO. I'd love to be able to see a live recording get released in some form because I was really impressed with how the songs translated. The set went by really fast (the album is only 37 minutes and change) but was definitely worth the semi-high ticket price ($45 cdn) and if they're coming to your area, go see them. You will not regret it.
