So who did the very first "mash up"?
 

I was just thinking about this today while watching the Superbowl and thinking about that Rock Sugar band. Who did the very first mash up?

As far as I can tell, it was either Dr Demento doing "Stairway To Heaven" with the lyrics to "Gilligan's Island", but I don't know who really did that and when. Had to be in the '70s or '80s.

Or it was the Replacements from their live show at CBGB in '84 when they were so drunk they did a bunch of mash ups (possibly by accident) where they did "Let It Be" with the lyrics to "Fuck School" and "I Will Follow" with "Kid's Don't Follow" (among others).

The Residents did an album called Third Reich And Roll in 1974, it's two side-long songs that are nothing but mash-ups of multiple pop songs.

Suprmallet is correct about the Residents being the stylistic forefathers of the mashup. Taking other people's music and fucking it up is their forte. Baby Sex (made, but not heard, in 1971) opens with "We Stole This Riff," which is the riff from Tim Buckley's "Down By the Borderline" with the lyrics changed to "We stole this riff/From Tim Buckley/And we'll steal from you/If you ever do anything."

But in terms of taking two popular recordings and juxtaposing the lyrics of one and the instrumentation of the other, give it up for The Evolution Control Committee. Doing it "without digital editing tools, on a Tascam Porta-Two and a linear turntable":

OMFG!!! Thanks for posting that! My mom used to have the original 45 in her collection, and I played it all the time when I was a kid. I think about that song every once in a while, and have meant to post asking if anyone knew anything about it, but I never remembered what the title was or who did it. Now I can see about getting it again!
