Can you recommend some good modern non-mainstream pop music?

I mostly listen to modern alternative ( black angels, brmc, brian jonestown massacre, etc ) rock and then old music of everything else.

I'll listen to pop music from the 80's, 60's / 70's rock, rap/hiphop, anything, etc. Lately I've been getting into blondie and michael jackson and realizing that pop music doesn't have to suck.

I don't know anything about new modern pop music other then whats on the magazines and whatever they're trying to sell this week at best buy. I don't buy any mainstream rock and roll music, and I know there are some great smaller rock groups, I'm wondering if the same goes for pop music?

Any recommendations?

I don't know if I would call it pop but you should check out Passion Pit, Phoenix, The Ting Ting's and in case you're still living under a rock, MGMT.

Well, by definition... "Pop" music is what's popular and on the cover of magazines, right?

Try:
Ra Ra Riot
The Temper Trap
Phoenix
La Roux
Friendly Fires

Re: Can you recommend some good modern non-mainstream pop music?

I was about to make a thread asking for some good indie bands/albums recommendations.
I was looking for some easy listenning, laid back songs in the vein of Beluah's Emma's Blowgun Stand and Throw Me The Statue's Lolita.
I'm sure there must be a million songs that have that a similar vibe, but I not a good enough researcher, I have tried some indie mixes from a few blogs but I've been out of luck so far.

As for the tread starter, I would recommend Black Joe Lewis album Tell'EM What Your Name Is, for some James Brown meets Blues Brothers meets Jimi Hendrix garage funk goodness.

lukewarmwater, if you enjoy Blondie you may appreciate Goldfrapp
She used to be deep in the 90s trip hop scene. From there she evolved into an icy retro-chic pop sound. keep in mind this is years before Lady GaGa

this Canadian chick Esthero also came from trip hop and moved toward pop.
she's done tracks with Black Eyed Peas and Goodie Mob but no one seems to remember her. i think her voice is pretty damn sexy

I've been listening to Alexandra Burke, the Noisettes, Little Boots. Give them a try.

Hey
Two band's I'd defintely suggest:

Shryne -
myspace.com/shryne
last.fm/music/Shryne
They're out of Providence, RI. Sort of an alt / pop / rock group with some really catchy songs.

Warpaint -
myspace.com/worldwartour
They're from California (Los Angeles I believe). Their music is a bit more laid back and different than most of what's out there, but it's really nice to listen to.

Some of these aren't really "pop" music but they are good recommendations nevertheless.

I would suggest Annie.

I'll suggest A Fine Frenzy, although she's getting more and more popular by the day.
Specific songs: Rangers, Almost Lover, and Electric Twist.

Just listen to SOMA-FM/Indie Pop Rocks for awhile and you'll discover a bunch of great non-mainstream artists. Everytime I listen I discover new bands that I really like...

I can't believe nobody has listed the New Pornographers yet. They're seriously among the finest pure pop songwriters of all-time.

Check out these tracks:

Mass Romantic

Chump Change

From Blown Speakers

The Bleeding Heart Show

My Rights Versus Yours

Myriad Harbour
