WTF? Billy Idol may be replacing Steven Tyler in Aerosmith

Billy Idol linked to Aerosmith role
Jan. 29, 2010, 11:33 AM EST
WENN -- Veteran rocker Billy Idol has become the latest big name rumoured to be in the running to replace Steven Tyler as frontman of Aerosmith.

The band revealed they will be hosting auditions to find a new member while Tyler takes a hiatus, with guitarist Joe Perry insisting the star won't be ready to tour with them until he recovers from a recent stint in rehab and a series of operations.

Lenny Kravitz was the first singer linked to the role, but admitted he would never take over from Tyler, while reports have also suggested former Queen star Paul Rodgers.

Now Idol is rumoured to be in contention, with Classic Rock magazine reporting he was due to meet with the musicians but pulled out after falling sick.

A source tells the publication, "Joe said he wanted to talk to Billy about joining Aerosmith, because the band were having problems with Steven. As far as I know Idol did not show up due to having a cold."

Perry recently admitted they have already talked to a number of singers about replacing Tyler, but refused to divulge any names. He said, "(There's) a few people we've talked to, and we'll see how it goes... As far as auditions go, we'll probably just sit around and have a couple of drinks and see if we get along -- because we're already gonna know that they can sing."

He has a better voice than Tyler.

Although, his last album was much better than any of the shit that Aerosmith has been putting out, so I'd rather he do his own stuff. I checked him out on a club tour 3 or 4 years back and it was a great show.

none of the people mentioned in that story have been musically relevant in decades.

Uhmm ... uhhh....

Idol would be a good replacement if they have to get one but they really don't. I've bought every Aerosmith album since I became a fan in '88 (and it hasn't always been easy) but there's no way I'll be picking one up with another lead singer.

Hang it up.

I know he was in the fake Queen but calling him former Queen star? WTF is that about?!?!?!

As far as the Aerosmith thing, I couldn't care less since I haven't purchased anything by them for a long time, and that seems unlikely to change. I'd be much more likely to buy a Billy Idol album that has nothing to do with Aerosmith.

Billy Idol is far better off, without being attached to Aerosmith.

This. A good choice for Aerosmith, but doesn't need them.

I don't see why they can't just reconcile with Tyler.

Re: WTF? Billy Idol may be replacing Steven Tyler in Aerosmith

Even if it means lower ticket sales, I think they should change their names (and not Aerosmith + Billy Idol). Tyler-less Aerosmith is like Jagger-less Stones. Granted, Queen + Paul sold a lot of tickets but the response seemed to be more negative than positive because the general consensus is that "Queen" died with Freddie Mercury, and the absence of John Deacon didn't help matters either.

Do the Alter Bridge/Talk Show thing and rename yourselves without Tyler.

If you're going to look to the world of hip-hop, why not Rev Run or Darryl McDaniels? They already know at least one of Aerosmith's big hits.

I remember reading Hammer of the Gods when I was a kid. One thing that stuck with me from that book was a discussion of the fact that Aerosmith was basically an inferior Led Zeppelin clone, at least at first. Another thing I remember from that book was a story about Generation X and Led Zeppelin passing each other as one was coming into the studio and the other was leaving and Billy Idol started yelling at Led Zep that they were a bunch of fucking dinosaurs and should just go away. Put those two passages together and there's a certain irony to the idea of Billy Idol fronting Aerosmith.

I'm not sure I'd be interested in Idolsmith. Do you think they'd bother to record any new material?

I think they should recruit Russell Hitchcock so they can finally become Aerosupply, which is what they've been trying to be since the early 90's anyways

Or really go wild and get Diamond Dave in there. See how long it takes for him to piss everyone off and get booted. He can make a career of fronting bands and teaching them "hey, our last guy wasn't so bad in retrospect"

To keep with the theme of the article, I think he should be referred to as former Van Halen star Gary Cherone.

No shit. Time to let go guys. This is just beyond desperate. Aerosmith aren't releasing any new albums so why the hell are they looking for a familiar name/face to take over for Tyler? It's just so sad. Time to move the fuck on.

That's silly. Aerosmith was always a poor man's Rolling Stones. I've never heard a single one of their songs and thought "Aww, Led Zeppelin did this first (and better)." I have thought that every one of their songs could be done better by The Stones.

You're just saying that Aerosmith was a Stones Clone because Steven Tyler's stole his lips from Mick Jagger.

The Stones and the Yardbirds started from very similar places, and Led Zeppelin grew out of the Yardbirds, so any band that sounds sort of like Zeppelin is going to sound sort of like the Stones. But Zep went down a more metal path, and Aersomith followed along that path. I mean, Zeppelin spent their first year or two opening their concerts with Train Kept a Rollin', for crying out loud!

At least it's not as blatant as Heart. Listen to Achilles' Last Stand some time then listen to Barracuda -- it's the same damned riff!
