listened to a couple CD singles while preparing dinner tonight
Band Aid II: Do They Know it's Christmas? (why I don't know, quite frankly its hideous when compared the original)
Yello - The Race
Turin Brakes - 5 Miles (These Are the Days)

I just stuck the XX cd on my Amazon list earlier today actually. I liked the samples as well as the single they've been playing on Sirius, but I can't help but wonder if I'd feel cheated if I bought the album.

Really good stuff. The cover of NME seems like a little much, perhaps...
The Guardian called it 'The Ventures as recorded by Martin Hannett" and that seems about right. All of the songs are here:

My favorite one:

Again, I like the album a lot, just not as much as some of the ridiculously gushing music press.

Fair enough. I guess you could say I feel the same way about The Hold Steady. There's a band that I feel gets it's fair share of gushing music press - but imho, I don't see that they're doing anything particularly inventive, or that I find their music all that memorable, either. I don't think they are a bad band by any means, but for me, that just don't ignite that same spark that they do in those that really dig them. On the other hand, Gaslight Anthem aren't really all that far removed from what The Hold Steady are doing, and I absolutely love them. I suppose it's just about what elements do, or don't, work for you individually.

Re: What Are You Listening to? [January 2010]
re: The XX. It's a good record, a bit samey and far more laid back than I was expecting. I like it but I don't understand people tripping over themselves claiming how amazing it is. [And I would not really recommend checking them out live - very much a band that does the album with very little variation from the recorded version AND it's so sleepy that it's not very appropriate for the live setting.]
Today, though, I'm listening to Meryn Cadell's "The Sweater" on repeat. A friend posted the video on Facebook and I hadn't heard it in years. Amazing - shame the rest of the album was not nearly as good.

Re: What Are You Listening to? [January 2010]
[I saw them with School of Seven Bells at a CMJ showcase in October and confusingly the place all but cleared out after The xx were done leaving very few in the audience for SVIIB's AMAZING performance. Apparently The xx were doing a late night free show in Tribeca after the show I saw, but I can't imagine sitting through it twice in one night. Ugh.]
Anyways, today I'm on a James kick:
"She's A Star" and "Tomorrow" single sets - there's some great b-sides [and some not so great remixes] scattered amongst these six [!!] discs.
