My Middle Finger - Heavy Metal/Alternative/Prog

San Diego band My Middle Finger built up a pretty good local following and have 2 albums to their credit - their debut album, Sign Language, and the follow up, the self titled 2nd album.

They really managed to combine a lot of different hard music styles into something that was fairly unique.

Taking the aggressiveness and straightforward approach of Heavy Metal bands like Dio, Metallica, and Pantera, and then combining that with some of the Alternative melodies of bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, STP, and Tool, and throwing in some of the Progressive rhythms of bands like Yes, Dream Theater, and Rush, they came up with a sound that was challenging, but still accessible and very melodic.

Here are a few of their songs...

I forgot about this one - it's one of my favorites from these guys...

Any thoughts? I'm curious as to what our rather discriminating (in a good sense) music fans around here think about these songs...

I didn't catch the prog aspect, but they sounded a lot like Alice in Chains, which I like.

Not bad. But yeah I don't hear prog either. Seems these days the minute you play a bar that isn't 4/4, you're prog. Also, Tool is borderline prog IMO - I think bands are likening Tool to prog and then themselves to Tool.

Re: My Middle Finger - Heavy Metal/Alternative/Prog

Well, if you listen to, "No More Promises," for example, the riff and rhythm in the chorus is fairly Progressive. Like I said, their sound is something of a hybrid. I know that they're big on Rush, Dream Theater, and Tool, among other bands, and those influences shine through in rhythms and some of the riffs here and there.

But I do appreciate the feedback - I've been curious as to what the DVD Talkers would think about them because you guys are pretty knowledgeable when it comes to music. Even though I don't share everyone's tastes here I do think that we've got a pretty good cross section here, and overall I do think that most of what is discussed here is really strong musically. That's the long winded way of saying that I value your opinions on this.

And, no, I'm not in the band...
