The Flaming Lips musically defecate on "Dark Side of the Moon"

I had heard about their plan a while back and expected it to be interesting, but this is just...

Honestly, I can't believe any band would have the gall to try and sell this garbage, and do it with a straight face.

Here are two examples of the auditory atrocity they committed. As a result, my lone Rollins and Peaches CDs are in the garbage.

Can anyone out there reasonably justify this trash?

It was an experiment. Not all experiments are successful.

I thought it was kind of cool. I would prefer a band to cover songs in a different way, instead of making a straight playthrough.

 at the OP

Cannot wait to see them play this live in it's entirety on New Year's Eve.

Listening to the first minute or so of Money, I don't think the drummer has ever attempted to play an odd-time tempo in his life...and he sure didn't practice before they hit record.

Didn't like "Money", but "Breathe" had me hooked the whole way through.

Didn't care for these. The Easy Dub Allstars did a reggae version call Dub Side of the Moon a few years back that was good.

I'm thinking some of the bands who influenced Pink Floyd might like it. I love Dark Side. And I love the Lips. I don't hate this at all.

Hell, Pink Floyd did it! And made a shitload of money too selling it to any and all pot smokers stoned enough to buy it!

The Breathe one i loved right off the bat but the Money one took a few listens before i liked it.I love both bands so this is really cool to me.

Money is the worst song on Dark Side, so the cover isn't all that bad.

The best thing about the Flaming Lips is how EASY it is to ignore them.

And just like that, all subsequent musical opinions of yours are immediately discounted 90%.

I actually consider DSOTM in my personal top 100 favorite albums and I consider myself anti-drug except for the one time I tried a joint at 16, but that still made me chuckle.

He's absolutely right -- Money is the weak spot on the album thanks to rather mundane lyrics. Floyd covered similar ground much better with Welcome to the Machine.

As for reimagining Floyd, I'll take the Bad Plus's jazzy rendition of Comfortably Numb:

I'm also in the "Money is the least song on DSOTM" camp.

Not a huge fan of DSOTM so this seems kinda cool to me.

I don't see how you guys can think "Money" is so slight when the phenomenally boring "Us And Them" is on the same album.

Really? I think "Let's Dance" is atrocious but I'm going to rid myself of Hunky Dory because of it.

Holy fu.... okay. "Us And Them" is my favorite song on the record easily. The quad version of that tune is incredible. I think the deal with "Money" is that I just don't need to hear it again. Ever. Played to death.

Supermallet 12-29-09 05:38 AM

Re: The Flaming Lips musically defecate on "Dark Side of the Moon"

Sure, "Money" has been played to death on the radio, but that doesn't make "Us And Them" any less sleep inducing. It's the only track on the album I skip regularly.

I agree. "Money" has been completely overplayed, and it's not even one of the better songs on the album.

Suprmallet skips over "Us and Them" and I skip over "Money" whenever I listen to the album. "Money" doesn't even really seem to fit within the album. It feels like it should be on something else.

I felt as if "Money" breaks with the whole darker feeling that the album has. The best tracks imo are "On the Run" and "The Great Gig in the Sky".

This was great! Makes me not hate that song for being overplayed to death. DSOTM and Floyd in general gets hurt by overplayed tracks that drown out the rest of the material. Any Colour You Like, Waiting for the Worms with the great ending interlude Stop, the entire Animals and The Final Cut albums; those are timeless pieces of music.

Re: The Flaming Lips musically defecate on "Dark Side of the Moon"

So, I bought the album on iTunes, which goes against my morals, but the wife had some extra credit that she wasn't planning to use.

Anyway, I really like it. It's a fantastic re-interpretation of the original. On The Run might be my favourite song right now. I'm even warming up to their version of Money...

I look at it this way: If the members of Pink Floyd were all in their late 20's in 2009, instead of 1972 and 1973, the album would obviously not sound the same as the 1973 version we all know and love. I think The Flaming Lips went into this project asking themselves "How would it sound today?" and I think they did a better job than anyone else would have. In that regard, I think it's a great album.

I agree with everything you said there. I think it's cool to cover an entire album and I don't know of any other band who could do a better job than The Flaming Lips. They have a history with that album and think they did a great job at reimagining it.

By the way, the NYE show was pretty amazing. Seeing this album done live was fantastic. The performance of "Us and Them" was one of the greatest music moments I've ever witnessed.

Oh, and Steven really pulled out the bad-ass on "The Great Gig in the Sky."

I really enjoyed hearing their fresh takes on the songs, I doubt I'll listen to it that often but I thought they did a great job in covering such a monumental album.
