Songwriters giving band's their career #1 single

Sometimes it takes an outside songwriter to give a band or performer their only Number One Single.

One example: Aerosmith. They finally hit the top of the chart with "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" in 1998. It is the only Aerosmith song written outside the band - by Diane Warren, the behind-the-scenes gal who wrote "Blame It On The Rain" for Milli Vanilli, "Rhythm of the Night" for El Debarge, "When I See You Smile" for Bad English (John Waite's band), and others.

What's funny is that one of these songs hits it big, and then people buy the album only to find that all of the other tracks sound completely different (for better or for worse).

Some artists have written #1 songs for others, but couldn't do it for themselves.

Bruce Springsteen wrote "Blinded By The Light," which was a #1 hit for Manfred Mann's Earth Band in 1977. (Springsteen's closest was 1984's "Dancing In The Dark," a #2 single.)

Bob Dylan wrote "Mr. Tambourine Man," a #1 hit for The Byrds in 1965. (Dylan's closest was 1965's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" and 1966's "Like A Rolling Stone," both #2 singles.)

Unfortunately, in Aerosmith's case it's the opposite. Everything in their catalogue sounds the same.

Even when they have an outside source for material, it still manages to morph into the "Crazy/Amazing" motif.

Most of Heart's '80s hits were written by outside songwriters, including the #1 singles ("These Dreams" and "Alone"). Funny, I liked their '80s work at the time, but now it sounds so dated that I can barely listen to most of it. The '70s albums still sound great, though.

Jimi Hendrix's only chart topper was a cover of Bob Dylans "All Along The Watchtower"

Oh yeah and everything from Nsync, BSB etc etc was all written by someone else.

Chart-topper, no. But it was Hendrex's sole top 40 hit (#38 in '68).

Someone mentioned Lennon and McCartney, Paul McCartney wrote Peter and Gordon's biggest hit "A World Without Love". He also wrote "Come And Get It" for Badfinger, but it was not their biggest hit. Badfinger's biggest hit was "Day After Day" which was written by the groups own Pete Ham.

Ah, yes - Badfinger, the tragic duo. Pete Ham and Tom Evans, who both killed themselves in separate years ('75 & '83, if I remember correctly, although I don't know who went first). Their most successful song was "Without You," which was a #1 hit for Nilssen in 1972.

Barry Manilow - "I Write the Songs"

yep, that's right ... he didn't write it.

Nor did he write his only other #1 hits "Mandy" and "It Looks Like We Made It."

Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys wrote "I Write The Songs," and Manilow had a #1 hit with it in 1976. I always wondered why a Beach Boy would write a hit song for another performer when the band themselves sure could have used it as a comeback!

Pete went first in 1975. Then Tom Evans in 1983.

"Leaving On A Jet Plane"

This was Peter, Paul, & Mary's sole chart-topping single. It spent one week at Number One in 1969.

Peter, of Peter, Paul, & Mary, wrote a #1 hit for someone else - Mary MacGregor.

The song: "Torn Between Two Lovers" in 1977.

Pretty much any Garth Brooks song should be here. (especially "The Dance" which may or may not have been his biggest hit.)
