Songwriters giving band's their career #1 single
Sometimes it takes an outside songwriter to give a band or performer their only Number One Single.
One example: Aerosmith. They finally hit the top of the chart with "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" in 1998. It is the only Aerosmith song written outside the band - by Diane Warren, the behind-the-scenes gal who wrote "Blame It On The Rain" for Milli Vanilli, "Rhythm of the Night" for El Debarge, "When I See You Smile" for Bad English (John Waite's band), and others.

What's funny is that one of these songs hits it big, and then people buy the album only to find that all of the other tracks sound completely different (for better or for worse).

Some artists have written #1 songs for others, but couldn't do it for themselves.
Bruce Springsteen wrote "Blinded By The Light," which was a #1 hit for Manfred Mann's Earth Band in 1977. (Springsteen's closest was 1984's "Dancing In The Dark," a #2 single.)
Bob Dylan wrote "Mr. Tambourine Man," a #1 hit for The Byrds in 1965. (Dylan's closest was 1965's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" and 1966's "Like A Rolling Stone," both #2 singles.)

the 2 your mentioned our in a class by themsleves along with Billy Joel, Lennon & Mcartney, Taupin + John, Jagger + Richards, Stevie Wonder, Holland Dozier Holland, Brian Wilson

Even when they have an outside source for material, it still manages to morph into the "Crazy/Amazing" motif.

Most of Heart's '80s hits were written by outside songwriters, including the #1 singles ("These Dreams" and "Alone"). Funny, I liked their '80s work at the time, but now it sounds so dated that I can barely listen to most of it. The '70s albums still sound great, though.

Someone mentioned Lennon and McCartney, Paul McCartney wrote Peter and Gordon's biggest hit "A World Without Love". He also wrote "Come And Get It" for Badfinger, but it was not their biggest hit. Badfinger's biggest hit was "Day After Day" which was written by the groups own Pete Ham.

Ah, yes - Badfinger, the tragic duo. Pete Ham and Tom Evans, who both killed themselves in separate years ('75 & '83, if I remember correctly, although I don't know who went first). Their most successful song was "Without You," which was a #1 hit for Nilssen in 1972.

Not always true...most of the members of bsb's or nsync atleast co wrote most of the songs on their albums..
