Tom Waits: Glitter and Doom [live] 2xCD - 11/24/09
from pitchforkmedia:
For a while now, Tom Waits has been threatening to drop a live album document of his 2008 Glitter and Doom tour on us. And today, Waits' new website announced all the details.
Glitter and Doom is due November 24 from Anti-, and it'll be two discs, on CD and vinyl. Disc one is programmed like one evening's setlist, even though it pulls together songs taped at 10 separate shows. Disc two, meanwhile, is entirely Tom Waits stage patter!
Yes, "Tom Tales" is one long track of incredibly charismatic surreal gutbucket rambling. Take that, Robert Pollard and Elvis! Time to update those Christmas lists, kids.
Waits' website is currently offering the album's first eight tracks for free download. Head here to cop those tracks. The preview is exactly as inscrutably bizarre as you'd hope a Waits live album would be, but it still makes room for the heart-wrecked ballad "Fannin Street".
Glitter and Doom:
CD1:
01 Lucinda / Ain't Goin Down (Birmingham - 07/03/08)
02 Singapore (Edinburgh - 07/28/08)
03 Get Behind the Mule (Tulsa - 06/25/08)
04 Fannin Street (Knoxville - 06/29/08)
05 Dirt in the Ground (Milan - 07/19/08)
06 Such a Scream (Milan - 07/18/08)
07 Live Circus (Jacksonville - 07/01/08)
08 Goin' Out West (Tulsa - 06/25/08)
09 Falling Down (Paris - 07/25/08)
10 The Part You Throw Away (Edinburgh - 07/28/08)
11 Trampled Rose (Dublin - 08/01/08)
12 Metropolitan Glide (Knoxville - 6/29/08)
12 I'll Shoot the Moon (Paris - 07/24/08)
13 Green Grass (Edinburgh - 07/27/08)
14 Make It Rain (Atlanta - 07/05/08)
15 Story (Columbus - 06/28/08)
16 Lucky Day (Atlanta - 07/05/08)
CD2:
01 Tom Tales
---------------------------
I love me some Waits but I'd rather have two discs of music and a download code for 'Tom Tales'. Still, saw the Detroit show on this tour and I'll pick this up.

Shitty that they didn't include a full show worth of music. Should have been 2 cds of music and than a third of talking if they wanted.

Agreed. That's actually a weak tracklist considering some of the sets on this tour.
No Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis, Invitation to the Blues, Innocent When You Dream, November, On the Nickel, etc... oh well.
Still day one for me. Also the Orphans 7-LP set should be out around the same time.

I am in for picking this up. Saw the show in St.Louis... thankfully I sold a couple of those books that were for sale at the show on Ebay in order to cover the insane ticket price.

Given you're from Houston, you probably saw the show at Jones Hall, which I did. It was a fantastic performance.
And I went ahead and bought the two disc bundle with t-shirt and booklet. Thanksgiving better get here soon!

Not sure how you don't include the awesome version of "Hoist that Rag" they played on tour, but, whatever. My buying this was a foregone conclusion.

Anyone else really frustrated by the sound quality of this thing? It's like a slightly above-average bootleg.
Also, the lack of Omar Torres is odd. The selected versions of "Make It Rain" and "The Part You Throw Away" are each exceptions from the same songs at other shows: no guitar solos. And, like I said, "Hoist That Rag" is absent altogether.
Still worth the money, of course. It's Tom friggin' Waits.

It's good, but I wish they released a DVD of a show from the tour. Also, I don't care so much for the arrangement of Singapore that was played on the tour.

Needed a dvd/cd combo and a bit of a better track listing but still certainly a must have.

Re: Tom Waits: Glitter and Doom [live] 2xCD - 11/24/09
i bought this the other day and im sorry to say that i pretty much hate it. i HATE the arrangements on all the songs, it honestly sounds like a bad Tom Waits impersonator trying to make the songs their own and losing all the greatness of the originals. i remember hearing bootlegs a few years ago with the same kind of versions but when i saw him in Akron awhile back, thankfully he didnt butcher the classics like that and the show was flawless. Falling Down, which may be my favorite Tom Waits song is just unlistenable now.
I can understand trying to mix things up, Nick Cave does it very well, but EVERY song is reworked and it just doesnt work for me anymore.
disappointing.
